News Article - eat Season - Aug 13, 2008

I just wanted to take a minute to thank everyone for a great season. Although we are done for the year after just 2 playoff games, we should hold our heads high. This was a great season. We won more than double the number of games as we did in either of the past 2 seasons. We defeated a division 1 team and a couple of the division 2 teams. There is no reason that we should not hold our heads high as we look back on this season.

I would also like to extend a big thank you to Corey for all he has done for the team this year in the midst of all that was going on in his personal life.

I hope that as a team we can stay together during the off season and be prepared to come back next spring and improve on our record once again.

News Article - - May 14, 2008

Not only was this game the first of a series against upper division teams, but it was against the team that finished second in the league in the 2007 season.

A determined Ephrata First was up for the challenge. Right out of the gate the Ephrata First line-up put the sticks to work with all but one batter seeing action and drawing first blood scoring 6 runs. Pumped on a great offensinve performance the Ephrata defense held Crossroads to jus 2 runs in the first inning.

The 2nd inning Ephrata returned to the plate and showed once again what we were capable of, scoring 3 additional runs.  In the bottom of the the Big Blue D took the field and shut the Crossroads defense down allowing no additional runs.

The third inning was not productive for the Ephrata offense. despite the effort only 3 batters saw action as each one popped out.  But once again the Big Blue D picked up were the offensive effort fell short. For the second inning in a rown Ephrata managed to hold Crossraods scoreless. the inning ended 9 -2 Ephrata.

In the top of the 4th the top of the Ephrata batting order decided to show their stuff with 3 runs which included a Homerun by Troy. In the bottom of the 4th the Croassroads line-up came to life and scored 5 runs, bring the score to 12-7.

In the 5th inning the Ephrata line-up got shut down for the 2nd time in the game. they were just unable to get anything going through the middle part of the line-up. The Ephrata defense answered back by holding the Crossroads Defense to 1 run in the Bottome of the 5th. the score was now 12-8.

6th Inning of an great ball game. The top of the Ephrata line-up once again showed their ability to produce runs scoring 2 more against the Crossroads defense.  In the bottom of the inning the Crossroads line-up just could not produce and manage just 1 run.  Ending the inning with a score of 14-9.

What an exciting game, tyou could feel the energy rising. However, that energy was not rising in favor of the Ephrata line-up. the Crossroads defense once again shut us down. Going into the bottom of the 7th inning Ephrata leading by 5 runs, Crossroads quickly showed that they were not out of this game as they rallied back and battered the Ephrata defense scoring 5 Runs, tieing the game at 14 all sending it into extra innings.

You could cut the tension with a knife going in the 8th inning. Once again it was up to the top of the Ephrata line-up and once again they show their ability to produce scoring 2 runs.  Now the question is can the Big Blue D hold up against the number 2 team in the league for 3 more outs.  The answer...

YES!  The Ephrata defense held Crossroads to just 1 run, ending the game with a final score after 1 extra inning of 16-15 Ephrata First.  What an exciting game!  What an exciting victory!

News Article - - May 14, 2008

This was the second game of our first double header of the season.

In the first inning Ephrata first managed to only score 1 run against the Hinkletown defense. Then in the bottom of the inning the Hinkletown batters took advantage or the tired defense and scored 6 runs taking a strong lead early in the game.

The Ephrata First batters did not fare much better in the second inning. the middle of the line-up managed just 2 more runs. Hinkletown batters returned to the plate and knocked the Ephrata defense around some more scoring 4 additional runs.

In the 3rd inning the Ephrata Line-up scratched out 2 more runs. The Big Blue defense that was present in the earlied game against Hammercreek B finally showed up to play in the bottom of the third. Only 3 of Hinkletowns batters saw action and no runs were allowed.

The 4th inning was probably the best inning Offensively for Ephrata First though we only managed to scre 2 additional runs. It has a great effort that tested the Hinkletown defense. Hinkletown returned to the plate with the top of their line-up and scored 3 more runs, bringing the score to 13-7

The 5th inning was a real scrap-fest, with the Ephrata batters digging out just 2 runs. In the bottom of the inning the the Ephrata defense once again faought hard and held Hinkletown scoreless. the inning ended with the score 13-9 Hinkletown.

In the top of the 6th our wearly line-up managed to score just 1 more run before surrending the bats and taking to the field again. Hinkletown responded to our best efforts by sending 3 more batters around the bases and back across home plate scoreing an additional 3 runs. The score was now 16-9 going into the 7th.

The 7th inning was not the "Break" that the Ephrata Offense was looking for. A bad slide into second base took John slater from the and onto the DL for 4-6 weeks. He was called Safe at second, but had to be carried from the field. The offense managed to score just 2 runs. The game ended with a final score of 16-12.  see the related article under News about John's injury.

News Article - - May 14, 2008

Thie was the first of our 3 games against this new team in the league.  Many of the players have played as part of Hammercreek in the past. This year Hammercreek formed this new team to work on developing some of their younger players.

In the first inning we held Hammercreek B scoreless with only 4 of their batters coming to the plate. We answered back by batting through our line-up and scoring 6 runs.

In the 2nd inning 5 of hammercreeks batters faced Greg's pitching skills but the strong defense held them scoreless again.  Ryan Smith led off the First Church offensive in the second inning. We batted through the order and the first 4 batters came up again, adding 9 runs to the scorboard before Hammercreek defense managed to close the inning.

In the 3rd inning the Hammercreek B line-up finally seemed to be getting in gear as 7 batters faced the Big Blue Defense. A nicely placed triple  earned the batter an RBI and scored their first run of the game. In an attempt to build on their Offensive rally Hammercreek managed to hold the Ephrata First line-up scoreless with only 4 batters approaching the plate.

In the 4th inning 6 Hammercreek B batters faced the big Blue Defense and they managed to score another run. In the bottom of the 4th, Ephrata First scored and addition 3 runs, bringing the score to 18-2.

In the 5th inning Hammercreek B attempted to rally and put forth a valiant effort but could only manage to score one additional run. Unfortunately for them this effort was not enough and the games ended due to the 10 run mercy rule.  The final score 18-3 Ephrata First.

Well, we suffered the first injury of the season and hopefully the last  during the game against Hinkletown Thursday evening.  I bad slide into 2nd base sent John Slater out of the game and to the ER with what turned out to be a broken left ankle.  I will be following up with the orthopedic Dr on Monday to find out how long  I will be on the injured reserve list.

News Article - Good but disappointing start - Apr 30, 2008

It turned out to be a beautiful Evening to start the 2008 Softball season Tuesday.  Our opening game was versus Vinement, our former team mates. We had a good turn out of players and fielded a good line-up.  Starting for us we had: Ryan at RC, Troy at 3b, Zach at RC, Bryan at SS, Mike W. at 2B, Greg at P, John at C, Jesse at 1B (Designated Runner Matt), Corey at LF, and Mark at RF.  Subs included Mike P. in for Jesse at 1B and Dixon in for Mark at RF

We started off the game and took a 3-0 lead after the first inning. In the 2nd inning we held Vinemont to just 1 run, but could not manage to score any ourselves and the inning ended 3-1 i our favor. In the top of the 3rd, Vinemont scored 2 runs to tie it up, but we managed to score a go ahead run in the bottom of the inning and finished the inning 4-3.  In the 4th inning we allowed Vinemont to score 2 runs and they held us to just 1 run scored and the 4th inning ended with a tie score of 5-5.  The 5th inning was the exciting yet disappointing one. We allowed Vinemont to score 6 runs but could only return to pick-up 4 runs including a two run Homer by Mike W. The 5th inning ended with a score of 9-11. The 6th and 7th innings went qucickly as we held Vinemont scoreless. An in the park home run by Troy in the 6th brought us with-in 1 point of Vinemont, but we could not manage to rally on that opportunity. Down by 1 run in the bottom of the 7th inning we just could not get the bats going and the game ended in a 10-11 win for Vinemont.

It was a good game overall and well played by both teams. The sportsmanship was great.
