Hawks shut out Futura Intensity
Apr. 13, 2010
Sunday, April 11 – After setting aside the turquoise alternate jerseys from Saturday and donning their customary yellow & black uniforms, the Hawks traveled to Tiffany Springs to face the Futura Intensity for the 2nd time in as many days. Sunday morning’s result was even more emphatic than Saturday’s 6-2 win.
Led by Maya, who exploded for 4 spectacular goals, the Hawks rolled to an 8-0 victory. Using her speed, quickness, and excellent dribbling skills, Maya was part of an all-around great effort from the team. From the start, the Hawks dictated play, constantly putting pressure on the Intensity defense.
Malia, who is off to a fantastic start this season, slipped 2 shots by the keeper to get the Hawks rolling. Once the Hawks broke through, the floodgates were open.
After a fairly average (for her) performance on Saturday, Mikayla rebounded with an excellent all-around game on Sunday. She played with more fire and aggression, scoring 2 goals on beautiful rocket shots past the flat-footed keeper.
On the back-end, defender Alivia played another tough, lock-down game. Several times, she was able to thwart Intensity drives to the goal. And she didn’t have to do it alone, as the forwards did an excellent job of getting back on defense; particularly, McKenzie and Mikayla, who both blocked close shot attempts. And when the Intensity was able to get a shot on goal, Kirsten was there to stop them, getting her first (official) shutout of the year.
Midway through the second half, Alivia moved up to play a little offense, but they didn’t skip a beat with Karli stepping in as defender. The newcomer has been a welcome addition to the team, and provides great depth on the back-end. The Hawks’ two dominant wins over Futura made for a very satisfying weekend. Next up: KC Italia.
