STAMPEDE Drops Opener, 2nd Game Ppd.Sep. 13, 2009 The Smithtown STAMPEDE opened their Fall season at Speno Park versus the LI Sharks Saturday (9/12) with a 2 hour delayed start time on their hands. Semi-muddy conditions -- deemed by umpires -- allowed time for only one game to be played. Team STAMPEDE took to the field to begin the game, with Jason bringing his heat. He faced three batters, striking out two, & walking one... who was subsequently picked off of first (in a run down) by Connor N., catching. Now coming to bat, Smithtown had one out when Anthony walked, then stole second and third. Anthony stranded on third, as outs 2 & 3 followed, was a sign of things to come for the STAMPEDE. In Jason's next two innings, the Sharks got their only two hits of the day. However, a few walks, and the Sharks being very aggressive on the bases, led to the 4 runs they totaled to stay out in front. The Pounder (Nick S.) relieved in the 3rd third after 2 were out, with the 2nd out coming on a sharp grounder to SS Nicholas who gunned home for the tag play. Nick S. had the stikeout machine in gear, as he got a K to end the 3rd, and followed with 8 more whiffs in the next 3 innings. With the 4 run damage done, the STAMPEDE bats proved near silent. They sent only 22 batters to the plate, with 12 striking out, 2 walking, and 2 hits. Salvatore's hit in the 2nd, and steal of 2nd, left him stranded when three strikeouts followed. Matt the Bat, smoked a 2 out rope to right center in the 6th, but was eliminated on a game ending FC grounder to shortstop. The 4 - 0 victory put the Sharks' record at 1W & 0L to begin the season. Game 2 of the doubleheader will be rescheduled and announced in the near future.
