Searching for Spark, Smithtown Drops 2Jun. 11, 2012 The Smithtown STAMPEDE took on the LI Stampede at Sagamore MS in yesterday's BOS doubleheader action. It was a day that saw Smithtown struggle with their energy level as they managed 5 hits in game 1 and only two in the 2nd game. Despite the light hitting, the LI Stampede had to make several highlight reel plays to keep the Smithtown offense in check. Smithtown's defense faltered in the 3rd inning of game one as the OBIS (One Bad Inning Syndrome) struck mightily. Elliott had cruised into the 3rd, but trouble came quickly. Three walks, a single, triple, and two errors in the inning allowed 5 unearned runs, 6 total in the frame. Frankie relieved with one out, but surrendered a single and walk before executing a DP on a liner back to the box. In the 5th, Frankie issued 2 more walks, hit a batter, and gave up a single. Frankie was not "picked up" after Scatch ran down a fly to right for the 1st out. A sure-fire DP ball went through the infield into right center, scoring 2. Two more unearned runs allowed by Smithtown now had 8 total tallied for LIS. Hit Man Anthony relieved Frankie for the bottom of the 6th with a 1-2-3 inning. Smithtown's only 2 runs in the 7th came after Jason's leadoff single. A walk to Salvatore had the two speedsters double-steal, with Jason then scoring on an E3 off of Elliott's bat. Walks to Brian, then The Stick forced in Salvatore to make the score 8 - 2 LIS. Final. For the most part, game 2 was immediately out of reach in the 1st inning for Smithtown. A leadoff walk, then a bunt that caught Smithtown standing with no one covering 1B started the slide. 2 more walks and 2 more singles put 5 LIS runs on the board. Smithtown's overall effort fell way short on the day, despite countering with 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st. A one out single to LF by Nick the Stick was followed by Josh's walk. A double steal & 2 out double down the LF line by Meatball, in his Smithtown debut, capped the day's scoring for Smithtown. Smithtown's only other batter to reach base in game 2 was Hit Man with a 2nd inning walk. Meatball (2.2 IP), The Stick (1.2 IP), Scatch (.1 IP/4 batters) and Hit Man (final 2 batters) were all on the hill for Smithtown. Smithtown issued 10 walks, allowed 11 LIS hits, but handed out 8 more unearned runs as they fell without incident, 14 - 2.
