Pool Play Split for STAMPEDE in RosanoJul. 21, 2012 The 14U LI Riptide was the opening opponent for the 13U Smithtown STAMPEDE to kick off the Danielle Rosano Charity Tournament. Smithtown sent Frankie to the mound as home team. With a walk and single in the 1st, the Riptide never seemed to threaten after that as Frankie went the distance (7IP, 3 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 1 SO), throwing only 79 pitches for the complete game victory. Frankie faced 5 batters over the minimum and had errorless defense backing him. In the 2nd, 1B Elliott whipped a throw across the diamond to Josh at 3B to nail a runner. SS Nicholas grabbed a ball in the hole that ricocheted off of Josh's glove and naile the runner with a strike to Elliott. The infield tallied 13 assists on ground balls and RF Jason turned a hit into an out at 1B with his usual rocket strike in the 7th.
Smithtown bats cracked 9 hits with them coming in bunches. Josh and Frankie in the 1st, with Ricky's walk in-between loaded the bases. They were stranded, but in the 3rd, 3 hits put up 2 Smithtown runs. With one out, Scatch stroked a single through the right side then stole second. Nick the Stick's (2-3, 2R, 3B, 2B, RBI) torrid tournament hitting continued as he slammed a stand-up triple to RC well beyond the Riptide outfielders to open the scoring. Salvatore followed with a a single to RF to make it 2 - 0 after 3 innings. Smithtown hitters went down 1-2-3 in the 4th & 5th, but had their rally hats ready in the 6th. Scatch once again started the STAMPEDE engine by getting plunked. He stole 2nd and was driven in by The Stick's 2-bag bomb to left center. Salvatore's gapper to left center scored The Stick. Josh then hit a scorcher to RF that was snagged for the 1st out. Salvatore stole 2nd & 3rd and looked on as Ricky walked. Frankie's SF8 scored Salvatore on the tag up, and Frankie then ran for catcher, Ricky with 2 outs. Frankie stole his way to 3rd and Meat singled through the SS hole for the RBI. Hit Man Anthony lined a single to left center but the STAMPEDE was retired with the score 6 - 0 in their favor. Frankie's 1-2-3 7th got Smithtown the opening game victory. The LI Breakers in game 2 nicked Josh for a run in the 2nd to open the scoring. Two singles and a walk did the damage, but Josh fought back to get 2 key strikeouts and a roller to 1B to shut down the inning. The Breakers kept coming as they capitalized on an errant throw from the mound, 2 singles and 2 walks for 2 runs in the 3rd. in Jason relieved to start the 4th and two more runs were in after 2 out were tallied. With a single, walk and 2 steals, a WP had the 4th Breaker run in. A double to left center got the 5th & final run in for the Breakers. Meat relieved Jason for the final 3 innings. He dominated the Breaker batters, retiring 9 out of the 10 batters he faced by getting 4 ground ball outs along with 2 whiffs. The Smithtown offense managed 2 singles (The Stick, Frankie) and a booming double to CF by Elliott over the first 3 innings but had nothing to show for it. Smithtown sparked in the 4th with The Stick's liner to LF to start the rally. He stole 2nd and 3rd, Salvatore walked and swiped 2nd. With 2 out, Ricky's hot bat smoked an RBI single in the SS hole. Salvatore took 3rd on the throw home, then scored on the catcher's throw down that sailed into LF. 5 - 2 Breakers after 4. A Smithtown run in the 6th was driven in by Jason, but a rally was stalled by Breaker defense. Meat walked and Hit Man drilled a liner to CF for the base hit. Elliott grounded into a 3-6-1 DP, Meat now on 3rd. Jason (2-2, RBI) legged out a grounder to SS for an RBI. 5 - 3 Breakers after 5. In the 6th, Smithtown got The Stick (3-3, R) on again, but could not get the needed runs to tie. Down 2 in the bottom of the 6th, Josh cracked a single to center. Ricky then hit a blast to CF that the Breaker CF immediately retreated on... spinning around twice en route, ball somehow found glove on the run. Frankie walloped a double to LC that sent Josh to third. With runners now in scoring position, Meat knocked Josh in with a single to LF making it 5 - 4. Hit Man stepped in, Frankie on third, Meat on 1st with one out. Pitchout, then strike one. The suicide squeeze was on... Meat broke for 2nd, Frankie started & retreated, and Hit Man put down the perfect SAC bunt. Hit Man was nipped by a whisker at 1B, runners on 2nd & 3rd, 2 outs. The game-ender came after Elliott worked the count full. He peppered a hard grounder that the Breaker SS fielded near the bag and fired ti 1B to stop the Stampede.
