STAMPEDE Drops Opener

Bookmark and Share Printer Friendly Jun. 26, 2009

The Smithtown STAMPEDE started strong in the 1st inning of their home opener with a bang-bang double play started by LF Connor S.   After the Angels' leadoff batter reached base and advanced to 3rd on a single and groundout, their cleanup hitter lifted a fly to left field.  Coming in and to his right, LF Connor S. made the catch and fired on a fly to Smithtown catcher, Anthony R.  It seemed to be the momentum-building play the STAMPEDE needed.

Seemingly in search of fire-starter, Team STAMPEDE lacked spark, and struggled to rally most of the game.  The Angels touched starting pitcher Salvatore for 3 runs, with 2 of the runs coming in the 2nd on 2 hits and a walk.  Salvatore was relieved at 72 pitches in the 5th inning after two batters reached on STAMPEDE miscues.  Two STAMPEDE relievers could not stem the tide of runs that followed.  Three hits and 4 walks with the bases loaded -- and 14 batters later -- led to 8 runs crossing the plate, enabling St. Joe's to put the game away with a huge 5th inning.

The STAMPEDE bottom of the 5th showed a bit of pulse.  Anthony R., Nick S., and Connor S. all got base hits, but a ground out to the pitcher was what brought in the team's only run.     Smithtown was once again unable to ignite or sustain a rally as their record fell to 0 - 1.
