Vikings Hold Off STAMPEDE

The North Shore Vikings got off to a fast start in the top of the 1st on July 9th as they registered a 4 - 1 victory versus the Smithtown STAMPEDE.  A no-man's land infield single, 2 steals, and a fly to right field that was lost in the sun after one out led to the first Viking run.  With a runner on 3rd, Salvatore got the cleanup hitter to pop to CF Paul, who fired just wide to the plate trying to nip the Viking runner who had tagged from 3rd.

Salvatore went 5 strong innings, only allowing an infield hit later in the 5th.  Backed by some nice defensive plays by CF Paul, and catcher Anthony, Salvatore was relieved by Paul with Smithtown trailing 2 - 1 after 5 innings.  In the 6th, after 2 walks and 2 strikeouts, a double down the RF line was relayed in from Connor S. to 2B Mike.  With one run scoring, and a possible play at the plate, Mike spun & gunned to 3B Timmy to nail the batter for the 3rd out.  The second (4th) run was allowed to stand, to finish all scoring, even though the out was registered before the runner crossed the plate.  Tough call for one umpire games.

Team STAMPEDE continues to struggle when hitting with runners in scoring position.  In the first 4 innings, 4 strikeouts were registered with RISP.  The big bats to start the STAMPEDE 4th rocked back to back blast doubles by Salvatore down the LF line, then Nicholas over the LF's head.  After Nicholas was out at 3rd, Connor N. drilled a single off the first base bag.  A fly out to CF, and then the strikeout bug followed to end the 4th inning.

The Smithtown 5th saw Joltin' Joe work a one out walk, and advance to 2nd on Timmy's well-placed sac bunt.  Paul singled to right, and on a Viking misplay to first base, Joe was sent home only to be tagged out by the North Shore catcher, retiring the side.  Bottom 6 saw Nicholas work a 2 out walk and advance on a PB.  Connor N. stepped up, and after one strike got drilled between the numbers for the HBP.  The Pounder stepped up with runners on 1st & 2nd, but hit a roller to the Viking 2B to end the game.
