The Souths ladies get better with every performance, only going down by 4 points to a very strong easts side, who won the carpenter cup last year. Souths certainly battled well n finished the game strongly with a tally of 3-06 which would have been unheard of last year. Biddy the blocker was in flying form with a woman of the match performance with countless blocks and the whole defense works very well as a unit. Alina made a few really good saves and the defense cleared the lines well, with Nicky linking up well with Grainne and amie on the wing. Disty and Grainne played well in midfield and covered a lot of ground. Donna gave a sweet pass on the right wing into Roisin Brouder who buried the cross on the volley to the roof of the net, everyone saw it !!! Except Ronan Brady !!! So apparently it didn't count ;) Orla Carey was industrious as always upfront and scored a nice point, just 1 ;) Souths finished very strongly with a lovely pass from Michelle Fleming into Gemma who helped it into the net. Gerry and Colin are going to great lengths coaching our ladies, Farrelly even got his belly button pierced last weekend :)) fine contribution boys! A great performance from the souths ladies who certainly from the body language of both teams après match emerged with the moral victory and can deservedly hold their heads high. Shamrocks are in for a big surprise this weekend !!!
Reserves
The wind was very strong especially on pitch 2 but Souths dominated the majority of play and emerged victorious against Shamrocks. Ronan mac looked comfortable in midfield and on the wing Liam Nolan dominated the backs with some wild yet effective dispossessing tactics. Gerry McGrath robbed possession and travelled well feeding the forwards and got on the score sheet himself. Niall known scored 2 goals, 1 in particular was a cracker, the other, not so much ;) Aussie Mick was solid with safe hands and distributed well. Mark Thompson played well on the right running off a month of Mammy Thompsons cooking. Greg hynes in the goals was lobbed from a long way out, not once ... But twice !! :) yikes
Seniors The wind was very much an inhibiting factor in this game. Paul o Leary had a man of the match display leading by example, catching Micks kick outs cleanly, scrapping well for the ball dominating midfield. Eddie McKeever stepped up well and really got stick in, and took some lovely scores. Ronan Brady's work rate was dominant in centre back and delivered ball to the forwards. Decky played well on Rory Bowe who's always proves a handful, Johnor was consistently awesome throughout :) Lofty gave a good lease of life to the game when introduced whose lively contribution set up attacking options. Tormey worked hard, ran with purpose but kicked like a mule. Shane McKenna kicked well considering the wind factor, although he judged the wind all wrong for the penalty ;)) although he wasn't alone with Tormey playing his who can kick the highest game, Ronan Brady wanted a piece of that pie late on. Ronan mac deserves credit for his work rate up front. The whole teams attitude and hard work closed out the game on top registering our 1st win.
To conclude, Big thanks to all the people who helped out in the canteen and bars. All 3 teams for Souths stepped up from the previous outting. Hopefully now we can build on these performances, train hard and reap the rewards. We're playing Shamrocks this weekend, lets register 3 wins out of 3 !!! On da SOUTHS !!!!

Division 2 Souths showed great promise in our 1st game of 2012. Liam Nolan strong in defence as always with a man of the match performance. Aussie Mick proved very strong also with some great catches n delivery up the park to our quickfooted Ronan Mc Anarney whose exploits on the dancefloor are finally paying dividends. Great running from Ray Mc Loughlin and Fintan McGrath in the middle of the park collecting kickouts and feeding the forwards even nursing injuries from a foreign sport and the demon drink respectively. The goal keeping performance by John O Regan was outstanding delivering some pinpoint kickouts, 1 in particular landing on the back of Stephen Tormey's head :) Damien Warrior O' Reilly was solid in defence as was Noel from Donegal who robbed the ball from the Mitchells in dangerous positions. A big Welcome back to Ian Kelleher and Stevie O'Brien who had a lively comeback. Gerard McGrath showed and passed well, even got on the score sheet ;) Robert Tormey had some nice touches, as did Stephen I suppose ;) Gary Boland played well on his birthday.
Ladies Football Hats off to the ladies who had an impressive 1st run out despite missing a number of players. The defence were outstanding considering incessant pressure from an ever very strong John Mitchells side. Bridget the blocker O'Brien, Marie, Louise Nolan, Pauline Hynes and Joanne soaked up serious pressure throughout the game. Katie worked very well....on her sun tan with her AFL style jersey. Amy McCarthy played a captains role leading by example both defending and supplying the forwards. Grainne Heduan was full of running all over the park and partnered up well with Orla Carey for a smashing goal. Roisin Brouder covered a lot of ground making good runs and supplying Orla for a few tidy scores. Claire Nolan made 2 very good saves between the posts. A big congratulations to Donna on her engagement, which could explain a few of the sore heads on the field ;) This game was played in serious heat and kudos to the ladies for battling to the end, Mitchells proved to be a big obstacle on the day but not as big as the tree that their coach Colin Farrelly walked into saturday nite ;)
Division 1 Match fitness had a big bearing on this game, the seniors lack of ball work was evident with handling errors n messy play at times, but the effort, commitment and energy was certainly there. Mitchells were a decent side who'd obviously blown out the cobwebs the previous week. I've no doubt we'll build from this performance and hopefully there'll be a backlash next weekend. The backs worked very hard throughout and in fairness there was serious work rate shown all over the park. Congrats to the boys who made their debut for Souths, Eddie McKeever, Paul Mac, Dave Farrell, Stephen Kilcoyne, Shane Glynn , Ciaran Smoothy O'Reilly, Shane Loftus, and Damien Warrior O' Reilly. Big welcome back to Ronan Carroll and Killo McGrath who contributed well. Gary Lawless showed well in fairness played well, but he's a dub ;) Shane McKenna was industrious upfront and was spotted taking balls home to practice frees ;) Stephen Tormey also worked hard up front with some good chances. Grandpa Brady covered a lot of ground from the centre back position, tackled well and supplied the forwards with decent ball. Eddie and Paul O' Leary worked very hard in the middle of the park, and i'm sure they'll be a dominant parthnership once they get some gametime under their belts. Stephen Kilcoyne also covered a lot of ground, tackled well, and was a very dangerous prospect going forward. The Sligo man ran nearly the length of the field down the left wing to slot over a classy point. Ciaran Smoothy O' Reilly cleaned up in the 2nd half intercepting a number of attacks. Shane Glynn also played well in his 1st game at full back, and was unfortunate to fall over himself ;) i'm sure he'll be back with a vengence ;) Hedge made a very good save and as always was very cute between the posts.
All in all, Souths worked very hard and now we can build from our performances now that we know whats expected. Bring on next weeks games Ps. Big Congrats to Domhnall McKeogh and the Emeralds Hurling team who registered their 1st victory of the season. On da SOUTHS
Finally the 2012 football season is about to kick off for all Souths teams, with all teams playing John Mitchells this weekend the 22nd of April. The division 2 boys are playing @ 11.00 followed by the ladies @ 12.30 and then to finish the days events our senior men will take to the field at 3.30.
The ladies team have 2 new trainers on board this year with Colin Farrelly and Gerry McGrath taking on the charge. With great numbers turning up to training every Thursday and everyone giving 100% this promises to be a great year for our ladies.
Both Mens division1 & division 2 teams are looking in great shape with Paddy Guiney being the man in charge again this year for the Division 1 team and Gerry McGrath a sucker for punishment will be player/manager for the division 2 team.
Hopefully all 3 teams can get off to a great start this Sunday, so come down to Willawong and support Souths GFC for the 2012
