Fourth win on the Trott!!May. 23, 2009
All Saints CC today won a thrilling and controversial encounter with Bridgwater Sports in Division 6 of the Somerset League.
Saints won the toss and elected to bowl first on a fine afternoon. Despite some brilliant bowling from S Trott (1-35), the Bridgwater batsmen hung in at the start, with an opening stand of 66, and at 91-2 looked set to post a large total. However, the first change bowlers, J Herbert (3-29) and M Summers (2-24) started to tear through the visiting batsmen. Once again, J Trott came in with a late flurry, claiming 3-5 from just 13 balls. Bridgwater Sports found themselves losing 9 wickets for 42 in just 15 overs as they were bowled out for 135. At tea, All Saints looked at their long batting line up and felt confident, but things soon changed when they got out to the middle. The opening bowlers performed with aggression and pace, and reduced Saints to 5-3 from 5 overs. With Summers retiring hurt with a nasty finger wound, Nunns and Seward worked hard to steady the ship. They put on a stand of 41 before Nunns was given out lbw by 'trigger' J Trott after getting an inside edge not spotted by the home umpire. Things looked grim when Herbert was out first ball, however, Steve Trott had other ideas. Steve was a man transformed today, demonstrating patience and shot selection along with his usual power. Seward played the supporting role as the batsmen rotated the strike cleverly. However, time ticked down and wickets fell, leaving the situation where All Saints needed 5 to win from the last over, with the wounded Summers bravely returning to bat one-handed. A case of mistaken identity from the scorers meant that the visitors had to bowl the last over without their main strike bowler, but Summers kept his cool and settled the home nerves to provide victory by 2 wickets. After the game, the visitors departed unhappily after the scoring error, but who could deny Saints the victory after S Trott's maiden half century (65 not out) snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. Spirits are high at the club after this amazing start to the season...well done lads!
