News Article - Mooretown Takes Two Points on the Road - Nov 29, 2009

November 29nd,           Mooretown vs. St Mary’s

Final:   Home 0 Visitors 4

Down the road we went to St Mary’s pad. Our expectations were mixed as we played St Mary’s for the right to enter the finals of the playoffs with the series between the teams going seven games and Mooretown coming out the winner. A strange ice pad with a very small neutral  and large end zones creating a new challenge. It is to be noted that during the last couple of practices we did practice point shots and hard shots to the net, so it seemed that every player on the Mooretown team brought out the big gun for the game.

Period one was mostly Mooretown passing and working over the St Mary’s squad. But, at the 5:05 mark of the 1st we took a hooking penalty and went on the PK.  To our success we killed it off and did in fact spend quite allot of time in their end.

Onto the second period.  At the 6:46 mark the winger who took the penalty in the first period scored the opening goal much to the delight of the crowd. The goal was pretty sweet and the player drove the net, picked up the rebound and banged away till it went in…nice!  An out skated St Mary’s team became more and more frustrated as Mooretown continued to skate, pass, and shoot at will around them. It during this cycle that a winger passed the puck back to one of our defensemen who apparently planned on shooting the puck thought both the goalie and the net, loaded up for the one timer, swung for the fence but missed. It was during this miss that our player almost did a 360 landing on his head. (rumor around the rink is he gets his hands from his dad – poor kid) At any rate it gave us all a good chuckle. The consistent pressure of the Mooretown group forced St Mary’s to take a slashing penalty right after our goal at 6:32. We then took a penalty at 6:25 evening up the sides to 4 each. St Mary’s then took another penalty with 52 seconds to go, and then a final penalty at 04 seconds to go sending us into a 5 on 3 to enter the third.

Forty five seconds into the third during the last few second of a 5 on 3 Mooretown cycled the puck and into the St Mary’s net it went.  As we continued to take slap shot after slap shot into their zone we took a slashing penalty out of nowhere and onto a successful PK we go. At 9:24 we took a body checking penalty that was questionable, however I don’t wear the strips. It was during this PK that we marked down the ice and hemmed in the St Mary’s team, cycled the puck, pulled out the guns fired away at will and one of the trusty wingers standing in the high slot shot the puck into the net and the game is now 3 zip on shorthanded goal.  With 7:32 to go one of our first year defense men smoke one of there player coming back into our zone (great hit, just one year too early) and into the box he went.  29 seconds later a frustrated St Mary’s player slashed one of our player and into the box they went to balance out the players at four a side. With 5:13 left to go one of our skilled centers took off and scored bringing the count to 4 nothing. Two minutes after that a St Mary’s player landed in the box for slashing and were successful in killing off the penalty.  With 1:46 remaining in the game Mooretown tripped one of their players and into the box we went. The game ended with Mooretown shutting out the St Mary’s team 3 zip.

News Article - Mooretown Defeated at Home - Nov 28, 2009

November 28nd,          Dorchester vs. Mooretown

Final:   Home 1 Visitors 3

A more prepared group of Dorchester skates showed up at our house and opened up the scoring eight, yes eight seconds into the first period with squeaker between our goalies pads.  As Dorchester seemed to be able to put on a skating clinic we took an interference penalty at 3:29 of the first then on the PP Dorchester scored again 3:12.  We finally managed to spring one of our centers out and down the ice he went scoring as he came across the net leaving us only on down. Dorchester continued to put the pressure on the frustrated Mooretown team and the same defenseman took another interference penalty at 1:26 of the first period to give the speed Dorchester team another PP at the end of the first and into the second.

We did kill the Dorchester PP and on we went. At the 9:05 mark of the second another Mooretown defenseman took an interference penalty this time we could not hold them back as we seem to struggle forming a box and focused on chasing the puck, Dorchester scored on an extremely lucky two person bounce at 9:42. Then at 5:48 after much antagonizing by the Mooretown team, Dorchester finally took a slashing penalty and onto the PP went Mooretown.  We could not buy real-estate ice in their end and they successfully killed the penalty. With 4:44 to go a Mooretown team know as CRUSHER(?) got called on tripping and back to the PK we went successfully holding them back.  With 39 seconds left in the second period Dorchester took a tripping penalty on onto the PP we went to end the second and to start the third.

Starting the third on the PP didn’t help and Dorchester killed it off.  With 3:32 left to go in the game Dorchester took two penalties a cross checking at 3:32 then a tripping with 18 seconds left to go but the Mooretown team could not seem to get their skates  going to capitalize on either PP.  This writer did hear mention that skating drills would be at the front of the next practice, something about a suicide drill also.
