May 25, 2013 - Seniors Suffer Another Loss

SENIOR LEAGUE DIVISION 1: St. Joseph's 0-14 v 0-10 Belcoo

St. Joseph’s final flurry of four unanswered points ensured they recorded a 0-14 to 0-10 win over Belcoo at the Ederney venue on a wet Saturday evening. Its now four wins on the spin for the hosts but for the O'Rahilly's their dismal run continues as they suffered a sixth straight defeat and are fast becoming cast adrift at the foot of Division 1.

It was the O'Rahilly's however who made all the running during the first 20minutes of this encounter. Dominating around the middle and moving forward with purpose the blues took an early advantage as both Jonathan Feeley and Brian Cox landed good scores.

Sporadic St.Joseph's attacks did yield two fine points from Martin McGrath wide on the right side but Ciaran Flaherty would restore Belcoo's advantage by the midway stage in the opening half. As the hosts began to filter a number of players back behind the ball Belcoo continued to retain possession but having failed to penetrate a compact defence and add to their tally St. Joseph's began to settle into the contest.

With midfield of McGrath and McElrone beginning to get a foothold the breaks were starting to be picked up by the hosts and by the interval Ederney would lead 0-7 to 0-3. Paul Gallogly landed a neat point from the left wing before Paul McCusker kicked two frees and Enda Ferris landed two 45's.

Free kicks accounted for the first five scores of the second half as Jonathan Feeley and Paul McCusker traded early efforts before Feeley and Ronan Ferguson (2) tapped over deadballs to get their side back to within a point at 0-8 to 0-7.

A strong run and fisted point from Declan McCusker restore a two point cushion but Stephen Maguire arrowed over a wonderful score from distance before Eoin Leonard levelled matters with a fine score from play.

Aaron Dennison and Ronan Ferguson exchanges points from frees to remain level at 0-10 a piece with 7minutes to play. The hosts would kick on over the closing stages to wrap up the contest, McCusker accounting for two of his sides points while substitute Niall Maguire and a late Ferris free settled the tie.

Ederney look to maintain their fine run of form when they travel to Lisnaskea on Tuesday night while Belcoo are still searching for a first victory when they host St. Patrick's at 7.30pm Tuesday.

Team: James McGrath, Stephen Nolan, Niall Leonard, Ryan Leonard, Paul McGrath, Brian Cox (0-1), Gavin Leonard, Stephen Maguire (0-1), John Carrigan, Patrick Burns, Eoin Leonard (0-1), Kieran Leonard, Jonathan Feeley (0-3, 2f), Ciaran Flaherty (0-1), Ronan Ferguson (0-4, all frees). Subs Used: Seamus Conlon, Declan Leonard, Barry McGovern.

May 19, 2013 - Seniors Lose By Three to Tempo

SENIOR LEAGUE DIVISION 1: Belcoo 2-8 v 1-14 Tempo

Belcoo suffered a second consecutive three point defeat on Sunday going down 1-14 to 2-8 at home to league champions Tempo. It is another week without a win for the O’Rahillys who are beginning to show signs of improvement but they now sit three points from safety after six outings.

The hosts played some great football over the course of the hour but again they would be unable to pick up a first victory of the season. A goal within 30seconds of the first whistle gave Belcoo a major lift, a well worked move down the left seen a number of quick interchanges of passes before Patrick Burns slipped Ronan Ferguson through to fire into the roof of the net.

Remarkably Tempo’s first foray forward also resulted in a goal. A long punt into Full Forward Thomas Campbell was broken into the path of the on-rushing Daryl Keenan who found the net from close range. Belcoo however responded well with some good passages of play and would hold a 1-3 to 1-1 lead by the 10minute mark.

Jonathan Feeley landed a point from play which Niall McElroy matched after a driving run before Ciaran Flaherty and a Feeley free kick had the hosts two points to the good.

Tempo came back into the contest and soon levelled proceedings with Keenan tapping over two close range free kicks. A point from an inside forward was added to by a Damian Kelly effort from distance as Tempo opened up a two point lead. Belcoo were still competitive but struggled to turn possession into scores as both Feeley and Burns seen attempts for points hit the upright and drop into Tempo hands. The visitors led 1-5 to 1-3 at the break.

From the throw in Neil Rogers extended Tempo’s advantage but Ciaran Flaherty, Ronan Ferguson and Flaherty again had drawn Belcoo level. Shane McCabe was introduced but was soon replaced having received a heavy challenge resulting in what looks like a broken nose.

Daryl Keenan would then add two more 20yard frees before Eunan McCann and Damian Kelly had helped the visitors into a four point lead. During a dominant period for Tempo Niall McElroy drove threw the Belcoo defence but see his goalbound effort smack the crossbar. McCabe returned to the fray moments later and his arrowed sideline pass sent Feeley through on goal, the attacker coolly slotted his shot beyond Stephen Jackson and it was back to a one point game, Tempo 1-10 Belcoo 2-6.

Stephen Maguire was forced off with injury while John Carrigan picked up a second booking for Belcoo and some rash defending allowing Keenan to land three more frees while Feeley hit two scores from play at the other end.

The game was very stretched at this stage as Belcoo needed a goal to salvage something from the contest however Niall McCusker for Tempo should have wrapped up the tie when one on one with James McGrath but the Belcoo ‘keeper made a good diving save to keep his side in the game.

Unfortunately for the O’Rahilly’s Tempo retained possession well in the final few minutes and added another point to their tally which ensured they left MacNean Park with the two points.

Team: James McGrath, Stephen Nolan, Niall Leonard, Ryan Leonard, Paul McGrath, Brian Cox, Gavin Leonard, John Carrigan, Stephen Maguire, Kieran Leonard, Shain Gallagher, Patrick Burns, Jonathan Feeley (1-4), Ciaran Flaherty (0-3), Ronan Ferguson (1-1). Subs Used: Shane McCabe, Eoin Leonard, Aaron Dolan.

May 18, 2013 - U10s Win Again

Belcoo Under 10s have shakened up the U10 league with back to back wins following a 0-8 to 0-6 victory over Ederney in what was a very tight encounter played in glorious sunshine in Belcoo on Friday evening.

Midfielder, Lawrence Mckeown was man of the match with a 5points tally while Dara Flanagan and Stephen Kelly were also among the points. Emmett McGuinness and Oisin O'Loughlin had excellent games in defence while the B team also put in a good performance.

The next U10 fixture is the final league game in Brewster Park next Friday against Enniskillen Gaels.

The Belcoo youth teams have had an excellent 2 weeks with under 10s, under 14s and minors winning all 6 games. Belcoo would again like to thank all managers, mentors and players for their committment to the club

May 18, 2013 - U14s Win League

U14 Division 5 League Final: Belcoo 7-11 v 1-5 Aughadrumsee

Belcoo defeated Aughadrumsee to win the Under 14 Division 5 League Title in terrible conditions on an extremely wet Saturday in Kinawley.

Aughdrumsee settled first and sent over a fine point from play. Belcoo came more into the game and were level when Conor McAloon converted a free. Belcoo began to play with confidence and within 10 minutes Conor McAloon had volleyed to the back of the net, he followed this with a fine point from play.

Next it was Ciaran Flanagan who beat the Aughdrumsee defence and hit the back of the net. The forwards were well on top and further points from C Flanagan and C McAloon had put the O’Rahilly’s into a commanding lead.

Belcoo's teamwork was excellent and all sectors of the team were playing exceptionally well. One lapse in the Belcoo defence let Aughadrumsee in for a goal. However, another goal from C McAloon and a converted point from a free from C Flanagan restored Belcoo's comfortable lead.

Belcoo were on top from this stage until half time. The move of the match came from a kick out by Doherty which found the excellent Furey and he passed to McGourty who slipped the ball to McAloon and onto Flanagan before the ball was finished to the back of the net by a Primary School player, Fiachra McAloon. C Flanagan scored another goal and a converted free before half time to leave Belcoo 5-4 to 1-1 ahead at the interval.

The second half started like the first with Aughdrumsee scoring a point. Belcoo again began to dominate and 3 points from C McAloon, another score from play from Burns and a further C Flanagan point.

However, Aughadrumsee never give up and scored  4 second half points. Belcoo made a number of changes with 10 minutes to go with substitutes Corrigan andFergusonboth finding the net before further points from Corrigan and Burns ensured a significant winning margin for Belcoo.

The forwards had a good game and received a lot of quality ball from the hardworking midfielders James McAloon, McGourty and McHugh who was operating as a third mid fielder.

The half back line of Shiels, Furey and McElgunn played fantastically as they have been during the last four matches. Doherty and McKeown were both very sound in the back line and Oisin McGrath again pulled of a couple of crucial saves.

Dara Flanagan Oran Flanagan & Matthew Mulvey also made a good contribution when they replaced McKeown, F McAloon & C Flanagan with 10 minutes to go.

The winning Belcoo Team - Oisin McGrath, Shane Doherty, Lawrence McKeown, Eoin Shiels, Colm Furey, Damien McElgunn, James McAloon, Michael McGourty, Gerard McHugh, Dermot Burns (0-2) Fiachra McAloon (1-0) Conor McAloon (2-5) Ciaran Flanagan (2-3) Daniel Corrigan (1-1) Mark Ferguson (1-0) Matthew Mulvey, Dara Flanagan, Oran McCann.
