May 17, 2012 - Seniors Make It Back To Back Wins

SENIORS: St. Joseph's 0-9 v 2-8 Belcoo

Belcoo recorded a second away victory in four days as they beat Ederney on Wednesday evening and in doing so inflicted a first defeat of the season to St. Joseph’s. The visitors produced a strong second half showing to come from two points down at the interval to pick up a 2-8 to 0-9 victory.

St. Joseph’s had their best period of the game in the opening quarter as they knocked over 4points in  a row. The home side were quickly into their stride as a flat Belcoo side struggled to get up to the pace of the game. Enda Ferris fired over a good point from play before he clipped over a close range free kick. Darren McCusker landed two more points from frees for Ederney as they took a commanding lead.

Belcoo had to wait 14minutes to open their account, wing back Eoin Leonard splitting the posts with a good score from play. Break balls around the middle began falling to Belcoo men and they had a period of sustained pressure before Jonathan Feeley landed from distance. Paul McGrath reduced the deficit to one with a long range placed ball before McGrath levelled matters with a neat score from play.

Over the closing few minutes St. Joseph’s managed to break forward with Chris Snow showing up well, the rangy attacker won a free which Ferris converted before he fisted a score from an acute angle to push his side 0-6 to 0-4 ahead. On the blow of half time Philip Leonard, Paul McGrath and Stephen Nolan all combined in an excellent move through the Ederney rearguard, the ball found its way to Ian Corrigan 12yards from goal but the full forwards left foot shot struck the outside of the post with the keeper well beaten.

On the resumption Snow pointed to move Ederney three clear before Paul McGrath kicked another long range free. Belcoo were beginning to dominant the middle third and their defence was well on top. Having turned over and Ederney attack the ball was quickly played to Shain Gallagher on the right wing, the forward carried the ball all of 40yards before been upended in the penalty area. Referee Paul Campbell awarded a penalty and Paul McGrath coolly tucked the ball into the corner to give Belcoo the lead for the first time, 1-5 to 0-7.

A Shain Gallagher point was sandwiched between two Darren McCusker frees to leave the sides level at 1-6 to 0-9 midway through the half. St. Joseph’s were then reduced to 14men as John Irvine received a straight red card and Belcoo soon took the lead again. Substitute Shane McCabe fired over a magnificent left footed score from near the sideline before Belcoo got a fortunate second goal. A Ryan Dolan shot for a point dropped in around the square and under pressure from Ian Corrigan and Stephen Maguire the home netminder fumbled the ball into his own net.

Ederney were then reduced to 13men as Aaron Denison was dismissed and Jonathan Feeley added an insurance point from a free as Belcoo comfortably retained possession over the closing moments to run out winners by 5points.

For the winners Niall Leonard was again on form at full back while Paul McGrath and Brian Cox came out on top in midfield. Ian Corrigan again impressed in the full forward line but it in truth the entire team ended up winning their individual battles after a shaky start. For St. Joseph’s Chris Snow was involved in  most of their good work in the opening period whilst Niall Maguire was lively throughout.

May 15, 2012 - U10's Off To A Winning Start

U10 RESULT: Belcoo 0-17 v 0-5 Devenish.

A strong second half showing from Belcoo seen them eventually pull away and record a comfortable win over Devenish last Friday evening in the Under 10 league opener. In a very competitive opening half Belcoo held a narrow one point lead at the interval, up by 0-5 to 0-4.

The teams traded scores throughout this half and Devenish were very much in contention at the break. Belcoo however pressed on in the second period, outscoring their opposition 0-12 to 0-1 as they became dominant in most sectors of the field.

This was an excellent display from the young O'Rahillys with Laurence McKeown putting in a magnificent shift as he produced a man of the match display although he was well supported by an excellent team effort.

Fiachra McAloon ended the match as the leading scorer with a tally of five points. The other scorers included Oran McCann, Killian Murray, Cian White, Arlene Furey, Daire Flanagan, Emmett McGuinness and the aforementioned McKeown. In defence there were also a number of strong displays from Patrick Walls, Matthew Mulvey, Oisin McGrath, McGuinness and Flanagan.

Our midfield pairing of McKeown and McCann worked very hard and were very effective. It was certainly an evening when all forwards were in good form.

The Belcoo A team were as follows - Patrick Walls, Matthew Mulvey, Emmett McGuiness, Oisin McGrath, Daire Flanagan, Oran McCann, Laurence McKeown, Josh Kililea, Killian Murray, Fiachra McAloon, Arlene Furey, Jamie Ray, Cian White and Conor McKeown.

The B team were also winners with good performances from Jack Greene, Ben McNulty, Conor McManus, Krona Higgins, Niamh McAloon, Ciana McGrath, Eimear Magee, Patrice Murray, Patrick Martin, Daire Cox, Aoife Keaney, Chloe McCarthy and Michael Burns.

The Belcoo and Devenish players had a good evening and enjoyed refreshments after the game. A big thank you to all the mentors. Belcoo travel to Belanaleck on Friday evening for the next game in the league

May 14, 2012 - Battling Belcoo Claim Second Win

SENIORS: Newtownbutler 1-5 v 1-7 Belcoo

Belcoo produced a battling display to come away from Newtownbutler with a two point victory on Sunday afternoon. The game was played in a difficult setting with a gale force wind and slippery underfoot conditions not making for the prettiest of football.

Newtown played with the elements in their favour in the opening period but in truth they were very wasteful. Belcoo on the other hand defended well and when they broke forward they rounded off their attacks with scores. At the interval the visitors led 0-5 to 0-2 however a bright start by the home side in the second half seen them overturn a 3point deficit into a 2point lead.

Newtown began the game on the front foot but it took them 7minutes to eventually open the scoring after they had missed a number of chances, Niall Mohan split the posts. Belcoo responded with a well taken score from wing back Eoin Leonard before Jonathan Feeley knocked over a free on the right side.

Belcoo dominated for the next 10minutes and Ronan Ferguson fisted a point while Jonathan Feeley carried possession 60yards before clipping over a neat score to give Belcoo a 0-4 to 0-1 advantage after 22minutes. Shane Leonard landed a Newtown score but Ronan Ferguson hit the final score of the half as Belcoo went in at the break three points to the good.

This lead however was quickly wiped out within two minutes of the restart. Kevin Connolly pointed two close range free kicks which were sandwiched between a Paul Donegan goal. Donegan had been introduced as a half time substitute and the corner forward found himself through on goal with his first possession and he tucked the ball into the corner past James McGrath.

The home side now held a 1-4 to 0-5 lead and Belcoo were reeling from a slow start. The game became very scrappy and error ridden over the next quarter and there was no more scores until the 20th minute of the half when Jonathan Feeley fired over a magnificent score from distance to reduce the deficit to one.

Connolly landed a score from play to extend Newtown lead before Belcoo struck their crucial score in the 53rd minute. Brian Cox launched a high ball into the square, Paul McGrath broke the ball into the path of Ian Corrigan who coolly slotted the ball into the bottom right hand corner from close range.

Substitute Damien Holleran kicked a long range point from play for Belcoo moments later to give his side a 1-7 to 1-5 lead and the visitors defended well over the closing few minutes as Newtown went in search of scores.

In the end Belcoo had done enough to secure a vital two points in this extremely competitive league. The full back line of Ryan, Niall and Gavin Leonard stood firm throughout for Belcoo while Brian Cox got through a lot of work in midfield. For Newtown Kevin Connolly was their standout performer taking a number of clean catches and driving his team forward. Paul Johnston was also to the fore for the home side.

TEAM: James McGrath, Ryan Leonard, Niall Leonard, Gavin Leonard, Ryan Dolan, Niall McGovern, Eoin Leonard (0-1), Brian Cox, Paul McGrath, Stephen Nolan, Philip Leonard, Shain Gallagher, Ronan Ferguson (0-2), Ian Corrigan (1-0), Jonathan Feeley (0-3). SUB Damian Holleran (0-1)
