Carlow Hockey Club

  2009 Team Photo

Carlow Hockey Club & Junior Hockey Club  was established in the early 70’s, the club has ladies and junior hockey teams.

Junior Club

Junior coaching takes splace on Saturday mornings and welcomes new members from 6 to 16 years of age.  We encourage new junior members, hopefully they will continue on to senior level and even play on interprovincial teams. Some players have come through this system to play inter nationally at underage level. Last season the junior club took part in the national U12 girls tournament run by the IHA (Irish Hockey Association) as part of women in sport initiative. Thirty two teams took part from across the country in the tournament.

Senior Ladies Club

Carlow Ladies play in the South East Division, training is every Tuesday night between 8pm and 9pm in St Leos Gym with league and cup matches are played on Sundays. New players are always welcome. If you have never played hockey before why not come along and give it a try? There is a great social aspect to the ladies club so it’s a good opportunity to meet new people and keep fit.

We are also looking for coaches and umpires to help and IHA training will be provided to anyone that is interested. If you are enthusiastic and looking for a fun and ambitious hockey club in the Carlow area, why not come along to training, a social evening or one of our matches.

Match Report

Carlow 1 - 1 Wexford 2nds

Carlow 0 - 2 Wexford 2nds (penalties)

Both teams travelled to Kilkenny today to play in the semi-final of the South East Plate competition and both teams were hungry for a win. Carlow were slow to start, with Wexford putting pressure on the Carlow defence and forcing them to make mistakes. There efforts paid off and midway through the first half they slotted home the opening goal of the day. Carlow started to fight back and started working the ball up the pitch. Leanne Lambert and Sinead Doyle made some great play through midfield to open up Wexford. Sarah Fingleton put some great crosses in towards the goal but Carlow severely lacked the killer instinct in front of the goal and could not put away any of the chances.

The second half Carlow came out determined to undo the damage and had Wexford on the back foot from the start. However this was short lived as the game settled and both teams were in search of a goal. Joyce Mahon was solid in defence and with the help of Natasha Collins, Sara Ashmore and Susan Willis they kept Wexford at bay. Ten minutes from the end, Carlow broke down the Wexford defence and Leanne Lambert took a shot on goal but it was denied and it was left to Orla Reddy to slot home the rebound.

The goal meant that both teams now had a chance to claim a place in the final. The match ended in a draw and went onto extra time with a golden goal situation. However neither team had another goal in them and so it was left to penalties to decide the fate of the two teams. Carlow selected 5 players to take the penalty flick and they were Lisa Walshe, Justine Collins, Leanne Lambert, Sara Ashmore and Ruth Treacy.

It was nerves all round as Sinead Doyle stood in goal to defend the first penalty and it was relief for Carlow as the ball hit the post. Unfortunately Carlow were not able to put away any of their flicks and even though Sinead Doyle saved two it wasn’t enough to see Carlow through.

Leanne Lambert and Sinead Doyle were great for Carlow and the defence had a great game.

Team: Marie Sheppard, Joyce Mahon, Sara Ashmore, Susan Willis, Natasha Collins, Ruth Treacy, Leanne Lambert, Sinead Doyle, Justine Collins, Sara Fingleton, Lisa Walshe, Ana Kehoe, Orla Reddy and Gillian Roycroft.

Carlow Ladies Hockey

Carlow 1 - Gorey 0

Carlow Ladies hockey club had a busy week, when firstly they travelled to Naas last Tuesday night to get much needed astro-turf practice against Naas 3rds. Carlow took along some of their second string of players, who weren’t getting match play, and this was a well worth exercise.

Carlow having had an influx of new players this season, needed to get match time, for both fitness and better bonding of players. Whilst the score wasn’t an issue, the time spent looking at the team, helped their coach to learn the strengths and weaknesses of the players.

This was used when Carlow took on Gorey Ladies in a back match, which was played in Enniscorthy on Friday night. Gorey who had previously lost to Carlow 3-2 last season, and who are well up on the leader board this season, were out played and outwitted in the game plan, and whilst it was a good game of hockey, Gorey were not good at finishing off their chances at goal. Carlow playing a 3-4-3 formation, with Sinead Doyle, Katherina Sweeney, Lisa Walshe and Ruth Treacy in midfield, Gorey faced a brick wall, which made them have forced errors when pushing forward towards the Carlow end.

Carlow in defence were never pushed to any great concerns, as Aoife Scallon and Natasha Collins were to the fore in clearing the ball. Sara Ashmore filling in as goalie, was up to the mark, keeping a clean sheet, in one of her few appearances in goal.

Carlow, playing 25 minutes aside, were the sharpest, to the breakdowns and a Sweeney run down the right, saw her pass cross the circle to where Lambert was waiting on the back post to slot home the only goal on the night. Gorey never really rallied a counterattack and were disappointed to lose the points against a composed Carlow team. Sarah Fingleton hooked up well with Leanne Lambert, to keep Gorey pinned back in their own half. Lisa Walshe having her usual free runs, played her part in supporting the defence when required.  Other players that are developing well are Sinead Doyle and Cathy Breen.

Team: Sara Ashmore, Susan Willis, Natasha Collins, Aoife Scallan ; Roisin Deegan; Sinead Doyle, Katherina Sweeney, Lisa Walshe, Ruth Treacy; Kathy Breen, Orla Reddy, Laura Byrne, Sara Fingleton ,Leanne Lambert & Ana Kehoe.

Carlow 1 - Wexford 1sts  5

Carlow changed the venue for this Sunday game as the pitch at St Leo’s was water logged and luckily were allowed to play the game in Enniscorthy. Whilst time was also kept short, Wexford ladies, having beaten Ballmena in the Irish Cup last Saturday week, were up and ready to continue their fine form. Carlow knowing Wexford’s strengths were lined out in a defensive set up of 3-2-3-2. This zig zag format makes it hard for teams to break through the gaps, and they have to work harder to find their players as they see a wall of blue in front.

But despite this strategy, poor tackling in defence, saw Wexford open the scoring after 5 minutes. Reforming and having warmed to the game, Carlow found  their own strengths and Lisa Walshe and Sinead Doyle attacked Wexford, with Sara Ashmore going close to equalising, only to see the keeper clear for a long corner. Wexford were forced to make many errors in play, before finally breaking down Carlow for the second time on the 15th minute from open play. Once again Carlow’s defence found lacking.  Wexford took Carlow by surprise after they were unsettled and scored two more goals in quick succession to go 4-0 at halftime.

Noticing the weakness in defence Carlow brought Sinead Doyle and Ruth Treacy back, and this saved the day, and Carlow found themselves in much better condition, and attacked the Wexford defence, with Lisa Walshe being fouled inside the circle, she slotted home from the short corner, to pull back the deficit somewhat. Carlow kept Wexford at bay for the remainder of the game until just on the final minute, Wexford slotted home their fifth goal, and the final effort of the day. Carlow noticed the absence of some of their stronger players, and Aoife Scallan will be missed in defence. Wishing her all the best with Waterford Ladies.

Eleanor Peters in goal had an outstanding game, making some excellent saves against Wexford to keep the score at its lowest. Jill Condell made her mark in midfield helping to keep Carlow on the attack on several occasions. Carlow learnt a lot from today’s game, and saw that fitness is a major issue to be treated if they are to perform better in the games ahead.

Team: Eleanor Peters; Roisin Deegan, Natasha Collins, Gill Condell, Ruth Treacy, Sinead Doyle,

Katherina Sweeney, Lisa Walshe, Gillian Roycroft, Sara Fingleton, Ashmore.

Carlow play St Leo’s Senior girls in a friendly in Carlow on Sunday. Congratulations to Justine Collins on the birth of her new daughter, and may she return to help the Carlow defence in time for the cup section of the season in the New Year. All new players are welcome. More information at www.carlowhockey.com

Carlow Ladies Hockey Match Report

Wexford 2nds:  1 - Carlow: 0

Carlow ladies Hockey team travelled to Enniscorthy to play Wexford 2nds in the South- East League. Following on from their win over Kilkenny 2nds last week, Carlow were hoping to continue their form shown, and to add another 3 points to their tally. However, Carlow fielded a different team, and many hadn’t played together to form a bond in play plan.

Carlow welcomed the return of Captain Ruth Treacy, who along with Leanne Lambert, held midfield well in the first 20 minutes, with Lisa Walshe and Sara Fingleton doing good front running. However, Wexford were well up to the task, and their defence held out any of Carlow attacks and making their own runs into the Carlow circle, a missed clearance in defence was quickly placed into the Carlow goal on the 20th minute in the first half. In reply, Lisa Walshe narrowly missed the net to equalise, but saw her shot go over the bar, leaving the score in favour of Wexford in the first half.

Carlow facing into the second half looked like going further down as Wexford upped a gear to put Carlow under pressure time after time, but for poor finishing this could have been a higher scoring game. All too many times Carlow lost control of the ball, giving away easy chances to Wexford, but for good defending by Aine Bannan and  Aoife Scallan, Carlow kept the result to just a single goal.

Best of the new comers to the Carlow Team were Margaret Julian and Ana Kehoe. Carlow Ladies are developing a good team in dept, and welcome more members who wish to join the club.

Team: Susan Willis, Aine Bannan, Aoife Scallan , Natasha Collins, Sara Ashmore,  Ruth Treacy, Leanne Lambert, Ana Kehoe, Sara Fingleton, Margaret Julian, Lisa Walshe, Sarah Walsh, Darina Keogh & Marie Sheppard.

Carlow Ladies Hockey Match Report

Carlow 2 - Kilkenny 2nds

Carlow ladies showed fine form on  Sunday 8th November, when they played Kilkenny 2nds in their home fixture at St Leo’s, Carlow. Carlow were out in strength with 14 players available and the squad having gained new blood this season. Lisa Walshe from Hacketstown, was in top form, attacking the Kilkenny defence and this was the difference in the two sides.

Carlow were dominant from the start with Sarah Fingleton  driving time after time down the right with strength that kept Kilkenny’s defence on the back foot for most of the game. Her crosses were finding the stick of Lisa Walshe who in the beginning saw some of her shots saved by the Kilkenny keeper.

But it was in midfield that Carlow dominated with both Katherina Sweeney, and Sinead Doyle, that kept breaking down the Kilkenny attacks and returning the ball to Walshe who kept the pressure on till she eventually got the opening goal with a reverse flick into the net. From the restart, Walshe once again was found from a Sweeney attack, and with a fine solo run she hit the roof of the net with a fine shot, which left the keeper standing. This was the score going into the half time break.

In the second half Kilkenny fought back but despite their relentless challenges Carlow were stronger in the one to one challenges, and players like Jill Condell, Natasha Collins, with Laura Byrne holding firm in defence, Carlow finished without conceding a short corner, and gained valuable 3 points in this South East League  game.

Team:  Eleanor Peters, Joyce Mahon, Laura Byrne, Sinead Doyle, Natasha Collins, Katherina Sweeney, Sara Ashmore, Jill Condell, Lisa Walshe, Ana Kehoe, Sara Fingleton, Roisin Deegan, Susan Willis.  Ref: Ivan Yeates.
