News Article - Blue Sox Sweep Rails - Jun 24, 2009 The CV Blue Sox swept the visiting Roanoke Rails in a double header at Liberty University on Wednesday evening. In the first game of the evening, the Blue Sox were led by the pitching of DJ Turpin who went four innings giving up 2 runs on four hits and Ryan Litz who gave the home team the go ahead push with his first home run of the season. Also, Drew Elkins came into a bases loaded, no out situation in the sixth inning with the score at 5-3 and retired the next three hitters on a ground out, fly out and strikeout. Also contributing at the plate was David Gaines who went 2-4 with a double and John Dansby who went 2-3 with a double and a triple. In the second game of the evening, Trey Finch pitched four scoreless innings to give the Blue Sox the ability to stay in a game that was clearly a pitcher's duel until later in the game. The Rails scored three runs in the sixth to go ahead 3-1. At that point the Blue Sox had been held hitless with the exception of a single in the first inning. In the bottom of the sixth, the Blue Sox scored two runs to tie it behind hits by Graham Thacker and Eric Conley , who were both driven in by a key double by Litz. The Rails responded in the top of the 7th with a home run from their big third baseman, Erik Helskey. The Blue Sox then came back in the bottom of the 7th to tie it when a fielder's choice from Brian Knowles scored Lucas Signor who had led off the inning with a single. After holding the Rails scoreless in the first extra inning, Conley led off the bottom of the inning with a double to deep right center field and was driven in with the winning run by a single off the bat of Tyler Coleman . That was Coleman's third hit of the night as he continued his strong showing at the plate this summer for the Blue Sox.

News Article - Blue Sox Gain First Sweep of the Season Over the Pirates - Jun 7, 2009 On Sunday, the Central Virginia Blue Sox gained their first doubleheader sweep of the young season by beating the Pulaski Pirates by scores of 6-0 and 3-2. In the first game, the Blue Sox were led by a strong pitching performance by Richard Glover (Lynchburg), Jake Wade (Bridgewater) and Brock Wilson (Gardner Webb). Glover started the game for Central Virginia and pitched a solid 3 2/3 innings giving up no runs and 4 hits, while striking out three. Wade came in to get the final out of the fourth and then followed that with a perfect 5th and 6th innings, striking out two. Wilson came in to close it out in the seventh, giving up one single and striking out one. The Blue Sox went down in order for the first two innings, but in the 3rd Graham Thacker (Roanoke) led off by drawing a walk. Tusculum's Payden Houser then laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Thacker to second. After Tyler Coleman (Virginia Intermont) singled Thacker over to third base, John Dansby (Virginia Intermont) drove him in for the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly. Later in the inning Mike Crowder (Tusculum) delivered a double to the right centerfield gap to drive in two more runs making the score 3-0. The Blue Sox came right back in the fourth and scored three more runs. Eric Conley (Tusculum) led off the inning with a double over the centerfielder's head and then scored on a single by Ryan Litz (Lynchburg). After Drew Elkins (Bridgewater) was hit by a pitch Thacker laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt allowing Coleman's second hit and RBI of the game. The pitching of Glover, Wade and Wilson did the rest. In the nightcap, the Blue Sox squeezed by the Pirates in extra innings 3-2. DJ Turpin (Patrick Henry) started for Central Virginia and threw three strong innings giving up no runs, one hit and surrendering one walk. Matt Morgan (Lynchburg) came to the mound in the fourth and threw two shutout innings, with four of the six outs he recorded being strikeouts. Trey Finch (Ferrum) took the mound in the sixth, but with one out in the seventh, gave up two runs, allowing the Pirates to tie the game. The Blue Sox did not score in the bottom of the seventh and the game went into extra innings. With two outs in the top of the eighth, Finch had back to back walks and was relieved by Brian Knowles (Averett) who got a ground out to end the threat. In the bottom of the eighth, Wade led off by drawing a walk. After Knowles struck out, David Gaines (Lynchburg) was called to pinch hit and he grounded out to third base, advancing Wade to second. After Dansby was inserted to pinch run for Wade at second base, cleanup hitter Ryan Litz delivered a two-out walk-off single scoring Dansby and gaining the win for the Blue Sox. Brock Wilson led the hitting attack for the Blue Sox by going 2-3 and scoring one run.
News Article - Bulldogs Sweep Blue Sox - Jun 6, 2009 The Kernersville Bulldogs showed why they are perennial contenders by shutting down the Blue Sox in Saturday's doubleheader 6-1 and 6-0. In the first game, The Bulldogs jumped out to a big advantage by scoring five of their six runs in the top of the first. Kernersville took advantage of walks to their first three hitters of the game and then a costly error that could have been a double play to stop the bleeding for the Blue Sox. Starter Blake Forslund (Liberty) settled in and found his rhythm after the long first inning but left after the second due to a high pitch count. Timmy Dudley (Liberty) took the mound in the third and pitched a stellar five innings to hold the Bulldogs in check the rest of the way out. The Blue Sox's only run of the day came in the sixth inning of the first game when Graham Thacker (Roanoke) led off the inning with a single and made it to third after Eric Conley (Tusculum) reached on an error by the Bulldog shortstop and then a failed pickoff attempt. Ryan Litz (Lynchburg) drove in Thacker with a sacrifice fly to deep center field. Offensively the Blue Sox could only muster five singles off of the tough Bulldog staff with Thacker having two hits and Mike Crowder (Tusculum) also adding two hits in three at bats. In the nightcap, Kernersville limited the Blue Sox to just two hits as the Bulldog starter carried a perfect game into the fourth inning. In the bottom of the fourth, Blue Sox Ethan Tanner (Patrick Henry) hit a single up the middle to break up the no hitter and Payden Houser (Tusculum) followed Tanner's hit with one of his own to right field. The threat was then stymied when Tanner was picked off at second base and the next hitter popped out to the second baseman. Brian Goddard (Shenandoah) started the nightcap for the Blue Sox and pitched four innings, giving up 3 runs on 4 hits and striking out 4. Drew Elkins (Bridgewater) came in relief in the top of the fifth and gave up 3 runs to the first 3 batters but then settled down to shut down the Bulldogs for the rest of the game. The losses take the Blue Sox record for the season to 2-4. The wins for the Bulldogs improve their record to 6-0. The Blue Sox take on the Pulaski Pirates in a double header on Sunday, the 7th at Liberty with the first game beginning at 1:30pm.

The Stars answered back in the top of the seventh to tie it 4-4 and then scored in the first extra frame to make the final 5-4. The Blue Sox started the scoring on a 2 RBI single by Crowder in the first inning scoring Gaines and Ryan Litz (Lynchburg), both of whom had drawn walks. DJ Turpin (Patrick Henry) started the game for the Blue Sox but left after 2 2/3 when he fell victim to 3 unearned runs. Matt Morgan (Lynchburg) then came in to pitch 4 1/3 solid innings giving up one run on 3 hits and recording 5 strikeouts.
