Those who did show were Besteki, Weger, Sterna and East. Filling in for the flies as a fourth man was Wilg Hog Jesse Gunter happy to play against his team as the game was a certain 5-0 forfeit win to the Hogs. Despite being seriously outmanned the Flies still put up a fight and managed to win the 'scratch match' 15 to 6. Jacek Besteki being the standout player with 6 goals and 4 assists but also notable was each player scored a hat-trick and the lowest points of any player was 4. See below for the full score count for the Flies. Total shots were Flies had 42 shots on and 22 shots against which seemed to be the main difference. News Article - The win streak continues (7) - Jul 26, 2009 For those that missed the trek to Blackwood and preffered to watch the showdown you missed an absolute thriller this afternoon. Starting on court for the flies was Weger, Bestecki, Sterna and Fraser and there were no changes from there. Failing to show was Caddy and Sam after failing fitness tests and also Eime (j) who was working for the man. Scoring first blood for the game was Fraser assisted by Bestecki and Weger at 11:39 and Weger then at 3:50 to put the lead out to 2-0, things were looking nice. A lapse of concentration from the rock in net East let one in to the Raiders with only 20 seconds remaining and dashed his shUt-out hopes. The second quarter saw the Raiders come back strong with the first goal to Moyle for the Raiders at 11:25 to bring the score back to level only to be answered by a gretzky effort from Bestecki at 7:44 to regain the lead. The Raiders werent to be put away just yet as X fly pfitzner at 6:59. The Raiders were the team of the quarter here as the Flies looked to be tiring before the long break and were outshot by the Raiders 7 to 4. After the long rest the Flies knew they had to put things away before they tired out again. They didnt let the Raiders even look like scoring, limiting them to 4 shots on goal but pummeling the Raiders man in net with a total 12 SOG's. Bestecki scored early at 11:09 to put it to 4-3. Fraser lined up a nice slap shot from long way out but the shot went to high and hit team mate Sterna on the jaw for a deflection into the net for the 2 goal lead. Very quickly after Fraser did put one in from a slap shot at 7:30 holding his reputation as the Flies best long shot. Sterna finally got one from the stick at 1:50 assisted by Bestecki and sliding it easily through the five hole from a quick wrist shot. At the end of the third the Flies had a commanding lead of 7-3 and set out to shut things up in the fourth. The Raiders werent done yet however, they capitalised on the tired flies scoring the first 2 goals at 11:52 (only 8 seconds in) and again at 9:34 to look a lot more dangerous very early in the period at 7-5. Sterna put in a steadier at 7:20 with a cheeky tight wrist shot from the right wing only to be answered by the Raiders at 4:54. Weger put in his 2nd and 22nd for the season at 3:16 to ensure the Raiders had no chance of coming back. The Flies won out theyre 7th match in a row 9 to 6.
News Article - 6 in a row - Jul 19, 2009 This week the Flies carried their winning streak to 6 games in a row. The game barely looked in doubt from the outset. The First quarter saw 8 goals to 9 the Flies way against the Roots and a lead of 1-0 courtesy of Weger but they werent taking everything they could fromt he rebounds with a couple of chances going by the wasteside. Those chances were capitalised on by Sam Heller putting one in from a lazy rebound at 9:55 and Andrew making that score 3-0 at 5:57 and as a team stole 2 goals from only 8 shots and limited the Roots to only 4 shots. After the half time mark again the Roots were restriced this time to only 3 shots and no goals. Andrew Weger was the only scorer with just 11 seconds to go for his hat-trick despite several posters from Shaun Sterna. The Flies set to shit out the game and go ont he defence in the last period yet still let 11 shots through and missed out on giving Dustin his maiden sht-out for the season with Strickland putting one past him at 6:58 in the last. Missing this game was Johnny Eimie and Luke Fraser only giving the Flies the 1 sub but their fitness showed through and took them to win their 6th game in a row 4-1. Next week the Flies take on the Raiders who look to be this seasons front runner behind the Flies at 13:00. Be there to cheer on the Flies!
News Article - 5 in a row for the mighty Flies! - Jul 7, 2009 Andrew Weger was AGAIN man of the match with a stellar 3 MVP votes from the refferess and looks to really have his shooting back in form now after last season putting most shots right into the goalie. The wild Hogs really put it to the Flies this week with a new addition on their team card in Tristan Reece who is well known for being an adrenaline development player. The Hogs opened with 2 goals, first to Reece at 8:31 unassisted, game Thug Jesse Gunter who had a total of 4 mins PIMS scored the second at 3:19 putting them in a solid position early in the game. The Flies got back in the second period with 2 goals to Weger unassited and East only letting one more from Reece through. The 3rd was the turning point of the match, holding the Hogs to no goals whie Weger put in a further 2 the second assisted by Bestecki saw them go one goal up going into the last quarter. The last quarter was a roller coaster as the Hogs came back with the first two goals to get one goal up with only 5:52 left and things werent looking good. An epic team goal from Weger assisted by Bestecki and Sterna directly from the faceoff in their defensive end saw them tie the game with only 4:17 remaining. It was a hard fought battle in the last 4 minutes but with some great passing when going forward Bestecki passed it to a free man in Sterna with 1:03 remining to see a slep shot go straight through the five-hole for the GWG, the Flies held things up in the last minute to ensure the win and their 5th straight. Next week there is a break but the following week they will take on arch rivals the Trees Roots at 12pm - make sure your there to cheer your team on!
