Coach Kate has spent a majority of her life on the soccer field, either playing, refereeing, or coaching. Soccer first entered her life at age three when her older brothers began playing and their dad began his coaching career. Kate’s personal soccer career began in kindergarten for a club team in West Des Moines, Iowa. Since then, Kate has only taken one season off from soccer, giving softball a chance; the Pink Ponies just didn’t cut it.
After moving to Salina, Kansas in 1998, Kate began playing soccer year-round, in addition to playing basketball and running track. In high school, she played soccer for Salina South as both a forward and a part-time goalie, earning various conference and state honors all four years. She was also voted captain her senior year, and is currently the fourth-highest goal scorer for the Cougars.
Kate received a soccer scholarship to Benedictine College, where she made an immediate impact as a freshman. Playing the forward position, she was the fourth-leading scorer, receiving “Newcomer of the Year” and 3rd Team All-Conference. It was during that time that she became both a teammate and friend to Coach Emily.
During their stint at Benedictine together, Kate and Emily helped the Ravens qualify for the conference tournament every year, and the team made the (2008) National Tournament for the first time in the program’s history. In her last season as a Raven, Kate was voted captain by her teammates, led the team in scoring, and was voted 1st Team All-Conference.
Outside of playing soccer, Kate also referees, and has been certified since 2007. Her coaching career began in high school when she volunteered for the local YMCA, coaching a 4th grade coed team. Since then, she has helped her dad coach two U8 boys' teams and worked with her old club team.
In the fall of 2011, Kate and Emily volunteered for the North Kansas City Community Center and coached a 5th grade coed team. At the same time, they began assisting Coach Duke with his U9 Freebird Soccer teams. In January 2012, Coach Kate took over head coaching duties for the Freebird Soccer Eagles, and with Coach Emily’s assistance, will lead the team moving forward.
