HAWKS OPEN WITH SOLID 4-2 WIN OVER FUTURA GALAXYMar. 20, 2012 Saturday, March 17 - Opening up at home against an unknown opponent, the Hawks weren't sure what to expect from the Futura Galaxy. Though they didn't quite play a complete game, giving up two late goals, the Hawks nonetheless played a solid opener and defeated the Galaxy 4-2.
McKenzie got the team going early by slipping a shot past the Galaxy keeper for a 1-0 lead. The diminutive forward played an excellent all-around game, working the ball well with her other forwards and hustling back on defense. After Kirsten blasted a monster punt past midfield, Dylan was able to corrall the ball, make a sharp cut on a defender, and power the ball past the keeper into the corner of the goal. The Hawks kept their 2-0 shutout into halftime thanks to excellent defense by Alivia, Delaney, Arlee, and Lauren H. The Hawks forwards also did a good job of getting back to help on defense. In the second half, the Hawks kept the pressure on the Galaxy. Arlee passed the ball up to Maya, whose rocket shot took a fortunate bounce by deflecting off a Galaxy defender and into the goal. Maya followed up that goal with another, as she sent a right-footed blast into the left corner of the goal off a sweet assist by Dylan. The 4-0 lead seemed insurmountable, but a couple of defensive breakdowns led to two quick Galaxy goals. However, the Hawks defense buckled down and held the lead the rest of the way.
