STARLINGS EDGED BY RAVENS 4-0
Apr. 8, 2012
Saturday, April 7 - In a game that nobody at Freebird Soccer was really looking forward to, the Ravens and Starlings battled each other on a cool and cloudy morning at WMSL. Hoping to catch their sister squad, the Ravens, napping after their Emerald Cup tournament championship, the Starlings came out and were the aggressor from the start. They played a hard-fought game and were easily the more aggressive team. Unfortunately, they came up a bit short, falling 4-0. However, Coach Mike had to be pleased as the team put together their most complete game of the year.
Up front, the team was led by Kintzli and Mia A, who both made several hard-charging drives up the field. Early in the game, Kintzli blasted one shot that went just wide of the goalpost. Also doing a nice job was Haley, who distributed the ball well to her teammates and hustled back on defense when needed. Avery showed off her wonderful dribbling skills, while Leah hustled and scrapped all game long.
Defensively, the team was led by the rapidly-improving Natalie J, who continually turned away Raven attacks. Her big leg also set off several nice counterattacks for the Starlings. Though she gave up an unfortunate goal early on, Hannah S did a very nice job in goal, snuffing out several close chances by the Ravens. She also boomed some very nice punts. Once Madison arrived, she picked up where Hannah S left off in goal. She also performed very well on defense, and helped lead an effort that held the Ravens to their lowest scoring output of the young season.
Despite the loss, the Starlings are definitely showing improvement. Though the Ravens may have not played their best game, the effort and play of the Starlings had a lot to do with it. They look forward to continuing their improvement as they eagerly await a rematch next week with the Ravens.
