SKYHAWKS HOLD ON FOR THRILLING 3-2 WIN!Apr. 17, 2012 Saturday, April 14 - Following a season-opening win over last fall's league champion, LS Fury, the Skyhawks hosted the only other team that finished in front of them - SSC Crimson - at WMSL on Saturday. The two teams split their matchups last year, so the Skyhawks knew the well-coached Crimson squad would likely give them all they could handle. Indeed this was the case. After the Skyhawks dominated the first half to gain a 3-0 lead, the Crimson equally dominated the second half. However, their comeback came up short and the Skyhawks escaped with a 3-2 victory, upping their league record to 2-0.
With potential severe weather and rain lurking, the Skyhawks were determined to get an early lead. Almost instantly, Abby K put the Skyhawks on the board when she took a great pass from Hannah H and sent a beautiful shot into the net. Hannah H followed that up with a solid goal of her own that gave the Skyhawks a 2-0 lead midway through the half. Katie continued to use her skills to move the ball forward, which kept the Crimson on their heels, while Abby H helped deter the Crimson offensive attack. Megan H finished off the Skyhawks' first half scoring with an impressive goal on a run up the right side. Aadyn played another solid half in goal as she gathered each Crimson shot that came into the box. In the second half, Kennedy was persistent in both moving the ball upfield to maintain pressure on the Crimson defense and turning away their drives. Lilli made a really nice run upfield, while Britta played the midfielder position well and almost scored her first goal of the season. Jo Jo not only had a couple of great runs upfield, but also did an amazing job getting back on defense to help fight of a relentless Crimson attack. That attack by the Crimson resulted in two impressive goals, and by the end, the Skyhawks were just holding on. The Skyhawks were fortunate as the Crimson's strong-footed #99 almost completed the comeback, barely missing just over the crossbar, and later sending a rocket shot that deflected off a Skyhawks defender. However, the Skyhawks were able to hold on for a good win. Coach Todd and Coach Josh were proud of the way the Skyhawks played in spurts, and will look to build on that momentum this week. The team will look to improve their engagement, field positioning, and ball skills at practice in preparation for their Sunday game against the Ray-Pec Elite Sting - the team that prevented the Skyhawks from finishing in a three-way tie for first last fall.
