RUSTY HAWKS HOLD ON FOR 2-1 WIN OVER LUFC WILDCATS
May. 12, 2012
Saturday, May 12 - It had been 3 weeks since their last game; not surprisingly, the Hawks showed some serious rust in their first matchup against the LUFC Wildcats. Despite giving up an early goal on a miscommunication in the back end, the Hawks battled back to take a 2-1 victory in round one of their back-to-back games against the Wildcats.
It was a frustrating first half for the Hawks, as they squandered several great opportunities to score. There were several times where a ball would sail across the Wildcats goal-line, or they would blast a shot straight to the keeper. But once they were down 1-0 after failing to clear a ball, they responded like champs. Mikayla made a nice drive up the left side and sent a sweet cross to Lauren H, who finished into the open goal to tie the score at 1-1. The game stayed that way into half.
The second half was much like the first, but the Hawks really stepped up the pressure offensively. McKenzie was everywhere, hustling back on defense and delivering sharp passes to the wing. Olivia showed off some impressive ball handling, while Mikayla almost delivered on a volley to the goal. In the back, Alivia and Delaney both played excellent defense, chasing forwards down and clearing the ball effectively, while Arlee gave great minutes off the bench. Eventually, the relentless pressure of the Hawks was too much for the Wildcats, as Alivia hit one of her many beautiful corner kicks to the far post. Olivia finished on the cross in a flourish, and the Hawks were up 2-1. Despite having several more opportunities to extend their lead, the game ended with that same score.
Considering the long layoff, Coach Duke was proud that the team managed to pull out a victory, especially since they didn't play their best game. The Hawks hope to be at their best when they face the Wildcats for round two...
