EAGLES FALL TO HARAMBE, ENDING AN EXCITING SPRING SEASONMay. 23, 2012 Sunday, May 20 - An hour after pulling off a thrilling 2-1 win over the first place KC Select Strike, the Freebird Eagles took the field to take on the second place Harambe Eclipse. Despite expending a ton of energy in the earlier game, the Eagles gamely battled for 40 minutes, but they just didn't quite have enough. In the end, the Eagles fell 3-0 to the eventual U9 B1 girls division champs. But this season, the Eagles showed wonderful improvement and made it clear they could match up with every opponent they faced.
A mistake in the Eagles goal box led to Harambe's first goal, a free kick taken at short range. Harambe was able to knock in another goal to make it 2-0 at halftime. Despite have several opportunities to cut into the lead, the Eagles just couldn't capitalize on any of them. It certainly didn't help the team that their top playmaker, Mia S, was missing her second straight game. Not to mention, the fatigue of playing back-to-back games wore on them. With only minutes left, Coach Emily replaced goalkeeper Ellie with Ashley to get Ellie on defense while Lilly moved her talents up front. Unfortunately, the Eagles continued to be frustrated offensively, and Harambe was able to slip in a late goal to make the final 3-0. Overall, Coaches Kate, Emily, and Duke were all proud of the team for an exciting spring season. The improvement was evident, as they were a couple of goals away from a top 2 finish in the division. Even though the spring season is over, the Eagles will continue on, traveling to Belton, MO on June 1st for the Southside Shootout.
