Blackjacks too hot for the Arctic Blast

The Green Bay Blackjacks won their home opener VS the Arctic Blast 21-6. The first half was dominated by the defense, with the majority of the scoring coming on from either special teams or by the defense. The Blackjacks took the lead when #36 Josh Russell picked off the Blast's QB and ran it in for the touchdown. The Blast answered back in the 2nd Quarter when their HB Damien Smith weaved through Blackjack defenders on a punt return. The Blackjacks quickly answered back with a 55 yard kick return from Andrew Rosenbaum setting the offense up in great field position. #2 QB Jason Laluzerne then connected with a wide open #15 WR Jerry VerHaagh for a 38 yard touchdown. The 2nd half was dominated by the Blackjacks, with them missing out on many scoring opportunities. QB Jason Laluzerne also added in a rushing TD and K #99 Hugo Barajas connected on a 36 yard field goal. When asked to sum up the game, head coach Larry Names said "We left a lot of points on the field. We had some miscommunications out on the field and we had the dagger shot on these guys many times and just couldn't execute. Our defense really carried us, playing lights out. We must just clean up the rest of the mistakes." Assistant General Manager TJ Schouten also added in "We played a hard fought game. The Blast are always tough and when you are facing a guy like (Damien) Smith, you only hope to contain him. You know sooner or later he will make one big play on you. We must go, fix all of our mistakes and learn from them. 2-0 does feel good right now but I know we want more!" The Offense was led by QB Jason LaLuzerne who went 5 for 10 for 71 yards and 1 TD and also had a TD rush and Jerry VerHaagh who caught 1 pass for 38 yards and a TD. The Defense was led by Josh Russell who had 4 tackles, 1 INT, and 1 TD and also by Josh Vandeleest who had 10 tackles, 1 INT, 1 kick return for 40 yards and 1 punt return for 43 yards. The Blackjacks have a bye this week but will be back in action on June 2nd VS the Joilet Buccneers in Joilet, IL at 7pm.
