2012 RIGG RACE
I am still looking for names of people who can help on the night of the race the 28th May 2012. I have some names already but would like more. If I end up with too many then I will let people know well before hand if they are required or not.

Social Run and drinks
I will be starting up again the likeable Weds night runs with a drink afterwards in a local pub. I hope to do at least 1 a month and possibly 2.
The first one will be held next Weds night the 18th April at 7pm meeting at the Steading pub at Hillend. The route will be approx 7 miles and the route will not be on any roads but on tracks and paths around the base of the Pentland Hills.
Once we have completed the social run, its into the Steading for a nice real ale and a sit in front of the real log fire.

April Fools Day Bog and Burn.

(pic by Lucy Marshall)
What a brilliant Bog and Burn today in fabby weather. We had 40 runners turn up but unfortunately Peter Mcgavigan had a wee problem with his leg and had to miss out so 39 hardy souls braved my route. Hope Peter gets better soon.
I hope everyone enjoyed the route with all the various types of terrain including a river crossing and some newly born (last night) lambs.
Big thanks to my wife Gillian, Ann Laidlaw and Elaine Sandeman for baking all the yummy cakes and for doing the water station at halfway, everyone appreciated that lovely bagpipe music belting out.
** More photos on photo page.
Most of all thank you for your donations to The Erskine War Veterans charity. We raised £66.00 this morning with some people pledging to donate next week. http://www.erskine.org.uk/

Run with Ron
The above picture is of a small number of Harmeny AC Pentland Runners based in Balerno who ran with the legendary Ron Hill one lovely sunny Wednesday evening in March. **More photos in gallery.
We ran in from Balerno to the newly opened Run and Become shop in Queensferry Street Edinburgh. We had been invited by the shop's owner, Adrian Stott, to come along and meet and do a short 4 mile run with 74 year old Ron Hill.
I've listed a small number of his major achievements below :-
Ron has run two Olympic Marathons (Tokyo 1964 and Munich 1972), and has a personal marathon record of 2:09:28. In 1970, Hill won the 74th Boston Marathon in a course record 2:10:30. He also won gold medals for the marathon at the European Championships in 1969 and the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh in 1970.
In 1964, Hill set his first world record, clocking 1:15:22.6 for 25 kilometres (16 mi), eclipsing Emil Zátopek's previous mark by more than 1 minute; he also set another world record of 1:12:48.2 for 15 miles (24 km) along the way in that race.
Hill was the first winner of the Freckleton Half Marathon (The UK's oldest) in 1964 and still holds the course record of 1 hour 4 minutes.
In 1966, Hill competed in the European Championships Marathon, finishing twelfth.
On 6 April 1968, in the British AAA 10-mile (16 km) championship at Leicester, Hill set a new world record of 47:02.2; he won the AAA 10-mile (16 km) every year between 1965 and 1969. Later in 1968, he again lowered the world 10-mile (16 km) world record, to 46:44.0.
In the 1968 Summer Olympic Games in Mexico City, he placed seventh in the 10000m.
In 1969, Hill won the European Championships Marathon on the Marathon-to-Athens course.
Hill's final marathon was the 100th Boston Marathon, in 1996. He completed 115 marathons, 112 under 2:50, 103 under 2:45 and 29 under 2:20.
Hill has built a streak, in which he has not missed a day of running since December 1964, starting when he was becoming established as a world-class runner. Hill continues his streak, though he now defines a 'run' somewhat loosely; he has established baseline criteria of only one mile run, at any pace. Nevertheless, Hill's streak is a benchmark that other such streaks are usually compared against. In his streak, Hill includes workouts after a car crash in 1993 when he broke his sternum, and after bunion surgery, after which he used a crutch for one mile (1.6 km) in 27 minutes the next day

Guys (and Dolls)
I am planning a run on the 23 mile Cateran trail route which starts at Blairgowrie and finishes at the Spittal of Glenshee sometime in March. Date to be arranged.
Can people let me know if they would be interested in joining me on this brilliant trail route. We would have to use a minimum of 2 cars for logistical reasons. Idea would be to leave cars at either end, have lunch when we finish in the hotel then head back to Blair.
If you are training for an ultra or a marathon then I can recommend this route, its a cracker.

Mabie Forest 10K trail race
The event is only in its 4th year and we are trying to establish it as a race of choice for existing trail runners and also those new to the event. (I am a road runner myself and always kept away from trail, however was converted after running this route as the scenery is stunning).
The event is to be held in Mabie Forest which is situated 4 miles south of Dumfries, off the A710.
Parking and refreshments will be available at Mabie Forest, which also offers superb facilities for Mountain Biking, Forest Walks and Picnics.
It is entirely in the confines of the forest and the course is on forest track.
The event is held on Sunday 10th June and starts at 11am. Entry fees are £13 (unattached) and £11 (SAL/UKA)
Entries are open and you can choose to enter on line via runners world:
www.runnersworld.co.uk/events
or by post (Note from Norma - I have a copy of entry form if required)
No entries on the day so please get in quick to avoid disappointment.

Tallin 10k, Half Marathon and Marathon
There is a 10k, Half Marathon and Marathon which all take place on Sunday 9th September in Tallinn, Estonia. A couple of our club members (Donald and Elaine) travelled there last year and took part and thoroughly recommended it. Entry costs at the moment are 30 Euros, with flights available direct from Edinburgh with Ryanair for around £90 return. This only leaves 4 nights accommodation which can be arranged at a hotel very close to the start/finish. If you are interested, please let me know, and will collate those names that are interested. Thanks to those who have already responded on Facebook. Thanks, Darren Cavaroli.

And for the more advanced/adventurous, Iain is leading longer hill runs on Saturday mornings.
"I will be running trail and hill runs most Saturday mornings as part of my own training schedule and any club member is welcome to join me. The routes will be of varying distance but expect to be out for at least 2 hours on these runs. Meet at Threipmuir car park at 9am Saturday morning if you fancy it and especially if you fancy trying some new routes. These will be good training runs for anyone thinking of doing Multi terrain, Hill races or Ultras. Expect underfoot conditions to be interesting."

Sport Relief
My Name is Cameron Mather and I'm heading up the largest celebrity challenge for Sport Relief. Its a 1,164 mile race around the UK and Ireland involving four celebrity teams representing England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
You can watch a movie on the challenge on this BBC link. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/sports_personality/15493066.stm The challenge finishes with the Scottish Team running the final six miles to the finish through the streets of Edinburgh joined by 1000 members of the Public who will all be chipped timed and their efforts will determine if Scotland wins the race. The race starts on the Esplanade of the Castle, down the Royal mile and around Arthur's Seat finishing at the Palace - I could think of worse places to run!
The reason I am making contact with your organisation is one of our corporate partners Citi bank received 100 spaces in the 6 mile runs in each capital city as part of their sponsorship package, unfortunately their work force in Scotland isn't big enough to fill these spaces so have given us 50 slots to fill with members of a local running club. I'm not sure of the scale of your membership but would you be interested in some of these places? They normally cost £60 which includes £50 worth of Adidas Scotland running gear to wear in the race for free and if you could raise a few pounds for Comic Relief in return that would be amazing. So free entry, and Adidas climacool T-shirt and Shorts for free and the hope you could maybe try and raise up to £100 in sponsorship in return to help vulnerable people all over Scotland through Comic Relief funded projects that would be amazing. I've attached a photo of the BBC Scotland News Team who are just some of those taking part in the run.
let me know what you think. Your country needs you!
Yours in Sport.
Cameron

Rescheduled Rigg Race a great success!
Well, May's loss was September's gain!
Once again, Harmeny's Rigg Race, which has been staged for over 40 years now, was a great success. Despite having to be rescheduled from May, when the unseasonably wet and windy weather made it unsafe to hold, the event was re-organised with the usual Balerno community enthusiasm.
Unfortunately, due to clashes with various Scottish Athletics fixtures there was almost no date in the calendar that was free, so numbers of entrants were down on the usual 200 plus, to nearer 100. However, all those that were able to make it, enjoyed a well organised and competitive event. Certainly, the 2 mile climb straight up hill to reach the Rigg never gets any easier.
In the men's results, Huw Jones from Hunters Bog Trotters (all together now H . B . T . !! ) was first home in an excellent time of 35:07 with Michael Anderson from Corstorphine and Scott Logan from Edinburgh AC battling it out for 2nd and 3rd in 35:47 and 35:48 respectively. First lady home was Phyllis O'Brien also of HBT in 41:27. First local home for Harmeny was Peter Kadobinskyj in 6th place with a good time of 36:29.
Serious athletes:

Most importantly, everyone had a great time (well, once they'd got to 3.5 miles and the downhill finish!) and there was a good bit of banter in the cozy Currie Rugby Club bar, during prize giving and post prize giving chat!
Many thanks to all from the Balerno Gala Trust for helping us set up and run the 2011 Rigg Race. We won't let a little weather ruin our traditional Annual fixture.
