Please contact Iain Morrice if you can help: iain.morrice@hotmail.co.uk May 13, 2013 - Summer 2013 Wednesday Night Runs To add a bit more structure to Wednesday night runs over the summer months the Runners Council have put forward the following plan. These runs will also be added in the events page with reminders on the Harmeny Pentland Runners members' Facebook group. These more structured runs will be for those who want to do them. If there are groups on the night who would rather do something else they may choose their own run. On Wednesdays 1 & 3 of every month there will be a "fast" group doing a constant (non-stop) run of around 8-10 miles at 7 to 7.5 minute mile pace. These have already started and Keith Martin has been posting the routes on Facebook a few days before. (Other members are welcome to post suggestions.) The "fast" group would be people such as Gav, Paul H, Angus, Keith, Murray, Fionna (don't worry if you don't feature in this list; loads of names are missing!). Other medium and slower paced groups can do the same route but should not expect the faster runners to wait for them. It is more likely, however, that the slower groups will choose to do only a part of the route or choose an alternative shorter route. These runs should be on our more well used routes so that people don't get lost, but don't worry, someone will stay with you if you don't know the route. On the 2nd Wednesday of every month we will do "out and back" runs of 1 hour. The point of these runs is that people can do them at their own pace, no one will get lost (because we come back the same way), everyone starts and finishes together, and it can be a good test of your ability to achieve negative splits (on the flat routes at least). Everyone will run "out" for 30 minutes and regardless of the distance covered, you turn around at 30 minutes and run "back". Really competitive runners can target to overtake others near the end to simulate over-taking people in a race! To ensure some variety, and take account of darker evenings in the autumn, the routes will be: 12th June - flat(ish) route from BHS along Lymphoy, through Blinkbonny, along Colinton Path, Woodhall Road, Colinton Road, or as far as you get, and if you're really fast, down past Napier towards town. Out for 30 minutes then turn around and come back the same way. 10th July - flat route along Water of Leith Walkway and onto the canal (if you get that far). The faster runners may almost get to Harrison Park! A good test in advance of the Water of Leith Handicap Race in August. Out for 30 minutes then turn around and come back the same way. 14th August - hilly route through the woods to Harlaw Road, up to Harlaw car park, up to the kissing gate, down Green Cleuch to Glencourse Reservoir (or as far as you get). Out for 35 minutes, back in 25 minutes?! 11th September - hilly route along the west side of Johnsburn Road to the bus terminus, turn right up the road past animal rescue, past Red Moss / Threipmuir car park, up beeches avenue, turn left and on the trail towards Loganlea Reservoir (as far as you get). Out for 35 minutes, back in 25! 9th October - flat route along Lanark Road towards the city. It will be dark by this time so a road run I'm afraid! Out for 30, back for 30. And then the fun bit.... On the 4th Wednesday of every month there will be pub runs. These can be your rest week for a social run, a drink or two and a stagger back. Watch this space for further details....
