Items For Practice
Goggles, towel(s), swim cap,and of course girls one piece swim suit with shoulder straps and boys jammer or brief swim trunks.
NOTE: You do not have to buy a team suit but I recommend that you buy a good quality suit since it will be getting lots of use. Some buy a suit to practice in and the team suit for meets, your choice.
NOTE: Parents are not required to stay for the practice but are welcomed to stay. We ask that if you do stay, please allow the coaches to do the coaching.
Swimmers Cards: Found in a index box at the HVL Pool. An index card with your swimmer’s name on it and a list of all swim meets will be printed on it.
What to do with cards?: Circle next to each meet if your swimmer will be at the meet or not.
What happens if you do not mark the swimmers card?: If you do not circle anything then it will be assumed that they are not swimming for that meet and your swimmer will not be entered into any events.
When should we mark the cards?: The coaches need know at least five days prior to the meet.
How long are the meets?: Meets can last up to 4 hours. (Average is around 3 hours)
What time do swimmers need to be at a meet?: Home: 5:00 Away: 5:30
NOTE: Swimmers need to ready to get in the pool at the above time. This means they should arrive earlier to get ready.
What should be brought to a meet?
Swimmers: Towel, Suit, Goggles, Either Money for snacks & drinks or snack & drinks. Blanket or something to sit on when waiting for their event.
Note: No alcoholic beverages should be brought to the meets.
Does the team do anything after a meet?: After the meet a number of swimmers and families go to McDonald's to celebrate. Everyone is welcomed and encouraged. It is an opportunity to meet others and build more team spirit. Ask around to find out which McDonald's.
How many events will each swimmer be competing in? The coaches try and enter each swimmer in at least 3 events. The swimmers ability to swim the various strokes affects what they can swim.
How do swimmers find out what events they are swimming? Coaches will post a list with the swimmers name and events they are swimming at the meet.
Are swimmers required to stay for the whole meet?: It is not required but encouraged. We encourage the swimmers to stay and watch and cheer for the other swimmers. Watching others is part of how swimmers learn to improve their own strokes and starts. This also allows time for the swimmers to get to know each other.
Do parents have to volunteer?: YES!! In order to run the swim meets and team volunteers are needed. It takes a minimum of 20 volunteers to run a home swim meet. Beside that it makes the meet move faster when doing something.
Will I get to see my child swim if I volunteer? Yes, No matter what job you volunteer for at the meet you will get to see them swim.
NOTE: It takes volunteers to organize the season, have pancake day, picture day, movie day and so on. The coaches are the only people who get paid for their service.
