News Article - Gillis Goes Wild - Nov 2, 2009 Lead by Charlie Gillis' 3 touchdown performance, the JVC Black Team lost to Marblehead 28 to 18 on Halloween. The Tigers put a scare into Marblehead as they refused to give up with some ghoulish plays on offense and frightening ones on defense. Gillis was a terror, carrying the ball like a galloping ghost with three touchdown runs of 72, 54 and 41 yards. Jack "The Vampire" Homans, Andrew "The Zombie" Freemont-Smith and Charlie "The Ghost" Gillis played every play of the game as the Tigers were a bit shorthanded. Peyton "The Werewolf" Fitzgerald and Griffin "The Skeleton" Wilson made a number of tackles on defense and Tim "The Mummy" Miller blocked very well. Ipswich ends its season at home against Danvers on Saturday at Town Hall Field.
News Article - B Team Scares MASCO - Nov 2, 2009 The B Team played its best game of the year on Sunday, holding MASCO to 70 yards total offense, and generally outplaying them. The Tigers played nearly the whole game in their half of the field, but held strong on defense, stopping the Chieftans at the 20, 12 and 6 yard lines throughout the game. The Ipswich Offense executed a combination of the Doublewing, WildCat and a tricky spread play to the tune of 130 yards total offense. Unfortunately the Tigers weren't able to put the ball in the endzone. QB Charlie Galanis had a big day on offense, rushing for 40 yards and passing for another 50. Jarred Cutlip also carried the ball well, and Robbie Glavin (2), Chris Remy, Charlie Robitaille all had receptions. The story of the day, though, was the stout defense that the Tigers showed. Corey Elliot, Ralph Francesconi, and Ben Prescott all had multiple tackles in the backfield for losses. Jarred Cutlip, Colton Davis and Charlie Galanis had several solo tackles from their LB/DB spots. Ryan White, playing Free Safety had an interception. The Tigers are looking to build on this game and get the win at North Andover next Saturday.
News Article - D Team drops Close one - Nov 2, 2009 The Tigers D squad faced their toughest opponent this season head on. The defensive played a fierce game. Alex Fecteau and Sam Fritz who were double teamed most of the day continued the Halloween nightmares for the Marblehead ball carriers. Pat Gillis had his best game of the season with two sacks, a fumble recovery and a caused fumble. Connor Silva and Caleb Comeau both had big tackles for losses. The saying goes that cornerbacks are men on an island. That was true for Zach Long and Blake Emerson who both made outstanding open field plays. Long stuffed a sweep for a ten yard loss and Emerson stepped up and tackled a Marblehead back twice his size to halt what looked like a sure touchdown. AJ Varga, Jake Wile, and Pete Spinale rounded out a superb effort. On offense Garret Labrecque broke several long runs but Marblehead's defense was tough and Ipswich could not get into the endzone. Jake Wile, pressed into duty at center after only one practice was a stalwart. The Tigers are looking forward to Hamilton- Wenham next Sunday. The coaches could not have been prouder of their team today!!
News Article - A Team wins 2nd in a Row - Oct 26, 2009 The A Team won their second game in a row by beating Newburyport 18-12 in a thrilling contest. On Newburyport's second drive of the day they were stopped on downs by the Ipswich Defense on Ipswich's 8 yard line. On Ipswich's next play from scrimmage, Nate Glaster took it to the house for a 92 yard TD. Ipswich lead at the half 6-0. Early in the 3rd quarter Glaster struck again with a 54 yard TD Sprint. By the middle of the 4th quarter Newburyport had evened the score to 12-12. With 4 minutes left Ipswich drove the ball down to the Clipper 10 yard line with a combination of Glaster, Andrew Connor and Curtis Lemonsky. With the clock showing 1:25, Ipswich fumbled the ball over to Newburyport. 3 plays into the Newburyport series, Glaster picked off a pass and brough it to the Newburyport 10 yard line. Ipswich pushed the ball to the 1/2 yardline with 6 seconds left. The Ipswich 11 ran the Wedge - and Curtis Lemonsky powered the ball over the goal-line for the winning TD to end the game. Erik Fyrer (interception), Nate Harrington, the Offensive Line including Matt Carey, Sean Hoey, John Kallas all had good games. Derrick Chamberlain was a standout on Defense. The Tigers look to extend their streak next Sunday in Marblehead.
News Article - Tigers drop heartbreaker - Oct 26, 2009 The JVC Black team lost a heartbreaker to Newburyport 14-12 Saturday on a rain soaked quagmire of a field in Newburyport. Dylan Perkins gained 28 yards on a 4th and long to keep the first drive alive for the Tigers. Two plays later Tommy Ginolfi scored on a 32 yard touchdown to make the score 6-0. Newburyport scored on their next possession to tie it up at 6 apiece. Ipswich came back with hard nose running by Charlie Gillis that set up a 27 yard TD run by Sam Blizard. The Tigers could not convert their extra points and that was the difference as fumbles severely limited the offense in the 2nd half.
Joe Tragert and Robert Gray both did a great job filling in for teammates who were out sick. The Tigers take on Marblehead next Saturday in Marblehead.
News Article - Tough Loss - Oct 26, 2009 In what may have been it's gutsiest performance of the season, an undermanned C-team lost another heartbreaker to a big, talented Newburyport Clippers team. With many of its players missing due to the flu, including 3 starters, the Tigers hung tough for three quarters. The Clippers had minus yardage in the first half. Newburyport scored the games only touchdown in the fourth quarter and held on for a 6-0 win.
News Article - C Team Loses to Lynnfield - Oct 12, 2009 The C Team's modest win streak came to an end Sunday against a very good Lynnfield team. Lynnfield won the toss and marched down the field for a score, eating up most of the first quarter. After a quick three and out, the Tigers punted and Lynnfield once again marched down the field for a score. By halftime, the score was 12-0, and the Tigers never recovered.
News Article - Tigers Drop Another - Oct 12, 2009 The JVC Black team dropped to 1-4 on the year with a 16-0 loss to Lynnfield. The Tigers had some bright spots, especially on defense, and signs of better days ahead are obvious. Jack Homans and Andrew Fremont-Smith did their usual impressive work on defense with a QB sack and an interception respectively. Other QB sacks were made by Jordan Hoey and Dylan Perkins. The Tigers made a number of tackles for losses and forced Lynnfield to punt three times. The team is looking forward to their game against Danvers this Saturday at the Town Hall Field.
