Tough LossBox Score Oct. 26, 2009 In what may have been it's gutsiest performance of the season, an undermanned C-team lost another heartbreaker to a big, talented Newburyport Clippers team. With many of its players missing due to the flu, including 3 starters, the Tigers hung tough for three quarters. The Clippers had minus yardage in the first half. Newburyport scored the games only touchdown in the fourth quarter and held on for a 6-0 win. The Newburyport middle school field was a quagmire, and it neutralized the Tigers' speedy backfield as Matt Gilligan, Alex Morris, Jake Long, Pat Flaherty and Hudson Bates were unable to find much traction in the middle of the field. The players looked like they played in the Mud Bowl by game's end. One look at linemen Bill Moriarty, Ben Brophy, Ryan Blomster, Tony Mennino, and Cole Sylvester, showed just how muddy the conditions were. Ipswich's offensive and defensive lines battled Newburyport's much bigger lineman to a standstill most of the day. Defensive end Mike Moutevelis had three quarterbacks sacks, and his counterpart Matt Temple had several tackles behind the line of scrimmage. The linebackers and defensive backs were stalwart. Pat Flaherty intercepted another pass, Alex Morris, Tyler Starr, and Richie Gray shut down the Newburyport runners, and Jake long stripped the ball from a Newburyport running back and returned it 50 yards before being caught for what might have been a game-winning touchdown. The C Team's next game is at Marblehead, Sunday Nov.1, at 11 am.
