News Article - HUGHES KILLS LEAFS CHANCES IN LIVERPOOL - Jun 26, 2007 Maple Leafs 1 travelled to Liverpool over the rainy bank holiday weekend still looking for that elusive 1st win in the National League. It was always going to be tough for the Leafs even with their best lineup on the field but without any of their starting pitchers it was going to be an up hill task against the 1st place Trojans. A tough ask it was for the visitors, and Unfortunately the search for a win goes on as the home side crushed the Leafs who were never in either game thanks to some very poor pitching by spot starter David Hughes. A pitcher's performance will often dictate the result of a game and Hughes performance certainly did that as he never gave his field a chance to push the Trojans in any area of the game. Hughes pushed out his worst ever performance despite recent mechanical improvements in the bullpen that have produced excellent command and huge improvements in velocity. Unfortunately non of that was evident on the Merseyside mound as he was victim of multiple walks bad command and a distinct lack of velocity. While the Leafs were powerless behind theHughes performance their offense continued its struggle to get to grips with the lights out stuff of Liverpool ace Martin Godsall who used his velocity and command to dominate the Leafs bats up and down the order. The one positive to come from this weeks rainy disaster was the pitching performance of Michael Rodger who showed his true potential for the first time in relief of Hughes quieting the Liverpool bats for 3 innings. Game 1 Maple Leafs 2 at 13 Liverpool Trojans Game 2 Maple Leafs 3 at 16 Liverpool Trojans The Maple Leafs travel to Sheffield next Sunday.
