Box Score

Nov. 7, 2009

DISTRICT 27-5A

CONVERSE JUDSON 45, CARROLL 31

CONVERSE – Carroll stayed toe to toe with Converse Judson in its District 27-5A battle, but the Rockets landed the knockout punch with a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns.

Carroll (7-3, 5-2) still advanced to the postseason and will meet San Antonio O’Connor next Friday at Buc Stadium.

But, for a while, it seemed the Tigers might topple Judson (8-2, 7-0), the traditional district bully. Carroll had a 14-10 lead, tied the game at 24 and then tied it again at 31. But the Rockets had a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns from Quaylon Jones, who scored from 1 yard for the go-ahead touchdown with little more than 10 minutes remaining and then iced the game seven minutes later with a 34-yard scoring run.

It was a running back’s contest. Charles Coleman again put up big numbers for the Tigers, rushing for 273 yards on 33 carries and thee touchdowns, including a 63-yarder to get Carroll on the board in the first quarter.

But Judsdon had two backs turn in impressive showings. Jones rushed for 212 yards and three scores on 24 carries, while Gabriel Hilliard had three of his eight carries go for touchdowns in finishing with 154 rushing yards.

KING 30, SOUTH SAN 27

King finished its first season under coach Eddie Hesseltine on a winning note in District 27-5A, with a fourth-down touchdown late in the game at Cabaniss Field.

Facing a 4th-and-2 at the South San 3 with less than two minutes remaining, Hesseltine opted to give the ball to Robert Polanco, who delivered with a game-winning touchdown for the Mustangs (4-6, 2-5).

Polanco’s touchdown gave King a 30-27 lead with 1:49 remaining. Adrian Briones sealed the win with an interception on South San’s next possession, allowing the Mustangs to run out the clock.
