Apr 4, 2012 - Regionals 2012
This past week, the Varisty girls, Julie Fitzsimmons, Brittany Rader, Alex Jones and Tamara Smith traveled to Brookshire, TX for the central regional tournament. The girls packed up and headed for Brookshire at 9am on Wednesday and finally arrived in Brookshire at 6:15pm. The trip down was very smooth and all of the horses, Chiquita, WeeMan, Cricket, Tornado, Bennett, Eldorado, Berlin and Foxy traveled as well as we could have hoped and wished for. After arriving in Brookshire, we were shuffled around a bit as to where our horses were staying, as the field they were supposed to be in had recieved too much rain and was too wet. We ended up at Mark Prinsloos' farm, the same farm were we had stayed for Fall Fandago.
Thursday, OSU had a 'bye' and were not required to play, but we still had to be there for a mandatory team meeting, and we worked the UT/Tech mens game that afternoon. We arrived at the ERG arena around 2pm and found that the watering system for the arena had malfunctioned and that the games for the afternoon would have to find a new venue. Luckily, there was another arena right across the road, and the owners were kind enough to allow us to play in it.
Friday, OSU played UT. We played a good game, not great but good enough for a big win of 14-0 by the time the wistle sounded at the buzzer of the fouth chukker. All of the ponies we played were amazing, we had the oppornuity to play the Prestonwood horses because UT did not have enough horses for a mens and womens team. They were great!! The Prestonwood horses are played outdoor by their owner, and the owners son who is 10, plays them all indoor. Talk about versitale!!!
Saturaday, OSU played Texas A&M for the semi-finals. The ladies played a tough game, and got better as the game went on. The second half, our defense improved and we finally put some points on the board. The game ended with a score of 23-3, in Texas A&M's favor. This was the first defeat of the season for the team. However, we received many comments from others saying that we played a good game. Saturday night, A&M hosted a party for all of the teams, and we all got together, put the days wins and loses behind us and had a great time.
Sunday, the girls worked the championship womens' game, Texas A&M defeated a competitive SMU and will be going to the National Championship game to be held at Cornell. For the mens' game SMU defeated CSU in a nail biting finish of 15 to 14. Chiquita recieved an honorable mention for "Best Playing Pony" WAY TO GO CHIQUITA!!! The trip home wasn't nearly as smooth, as the trip down had been. A blown tire, trailer lights not working, gravel spread along I-35 for 6 miles, breaks locking up on the trailer, turned a 9 and a half our trip into a 13 hour trek. However, the girls and ponies are home safe and sound and are enjoying a much needed break.
