History Like many of the military installions during World War II, Randolph Army Air Field (now known as Randolph Air Force Base) fielded a intercollegiate football team, named the Ramblers. Grabbing many top prospects from throughout the nations the Randolph Field Ramblers became an immediate success. In 1943 they completed a 9-1-0 regular season with Frank Tritico as head coach. That year they faced offed with the Texas Longhorns in a hard fought contest in the Cotton Bowl. It ended in a 7-7 tie. In 1944 the Ramblers came out running through opponents and finishing with an 12-0-0 record and with a #3 ranking in the Associated Press polls for the season. To make it even more impressive was the fact that they never let anyone score more than 7 points, while having 9 shutouts throughout the season. And they didnt just have a great defense, their offense came out everyweek as well, having 5 games over 50 points with 3 of them over 60. They outscored opponents 508-19 in their final season. With the training finishing off and the war getting into critical stages, the installions dropped their football teams as all their players were sent overseas.
