News Article - Lady Eagles Working Hard - Oct 9, 2009

The Lady Eagles volleyball team traveled to Jefferson County on Tuesday, September 22  for a district match. The result was the same as the teams' first meeting- a Jefferson County win in four sets. "One difference between the two matches was that we kept the games closer" commented Coach Ed Irvin. "Our bad spurts still outnumber our good spurts, and as long as that continues, we will have a hard time winning matches," said Irvin.
During the previous match up  The Lady Eagles volleyball team bus broke down on the way to  Cherokee last Thursday, and after the team arrived at the gym one  carload at a time, the team began their play as if they were not  functioning on all cylinders. "It got ugly early", commented Coach Ed Irvin. "We got behind 4-7 quickly & then we continued to deteriorate and fell back 11-17, finally losing 18-25 in the first set. We were playing like we were still on the bus, not in a gym for a match.
The Lady Chiefs jumped out to a 11-5 lead in the second set, but Seymour came storming back to a 13-13 tie. Seymour kept the momentum & won the second set 25-20. Seymour set the pace in the third set to  lead 13-7, and held on for a 25-22 win.
The fourth set went to Cherokee 25-21, with the Lady Eagles dropping behind early and was unable to catch up.  Once again, Seymour responded with a fifth set victory at 15-12 behind the clutch serving from freshmen Sarah Stoffle and Kasey Norman.
