Pirate Football 1960-1969A DECADE THAT VIBRATED A NATION
WHILE THERE WAS PIRATE POWER IN THE 60'S
It was a time when the world was ready for a big change, a new generation that can be described as baby boomers, flower childs, with pychedelic colors that would blow your mind. We all witnessed the Britsh Invasion in music taking the airwaves. Then there was the horrors of rasical tension around the country and the start of the Vietnam war in the mid 60's lasting through half of the 70's. And there was Woodstock which attracted new types of teens known as hippies free to love sending out a message "Make Love Not War". The country and the rest of the world mourned with the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. But the country soon overcame the sorrow by watching the first man walk on the moon. While there was 'Flower Power' here in Pirate Nation it was 'Pirate Power'. Coach J. Murry Stephensen became to be one the winningest coaches at Sinton High School. He led the Sinton Pirates to the State Semifinals for the second time in 1962. His all time record remains as first best winning seasons at SHS with a record of 153-83-10 from 1944-1966. During the 60's the Pirates remained in Class 2A from 1960-1965. Then the Pirates moved up to Class 3A from 1966-1969. Coach Stephensen will be remembered at Sinton High School as the first captain to lead a ship full of Pirates to victory. Setting the goal for future generations to keep the Pirate Pride alive deep in our hearts.
