February 18, 2010

The Comets have taken the season off waiting for the SSFL to regroup.  We didn't want to jump ship into some of the other minor league offerings. We will be having a few Pro Football style camps and work-outs sessions late in the Spring to prepare for next season.  Check back here for updates.  Thanks.

Welcome to the Tampa Bay Comets Website for the 2009-2010 Season

June 19, 2009: The Tampa Bay Comets are entering their 2nd season in the SSFL.  We will start having some early try-outs in the beginning of July and practices will start in September.  In the interim, we hope our veterans will continue to play for us as some new teams have entered our league.  We are also looking for OL and DL players as well.  Check back soon for where tryouts will be held and to our official field.  Those wanting more info are welcome to contact us via email at: rex@tbcomets.com.  More updates will follow shortly as we take a short summer hiatus.

______________________________

The Tampa Bay Comets wish to congratulate the 5 Comets players named All Stars for the 2008-2009 season.  They will be honored at the May 9th Citrus Bowl Championship Game.  The players are: Jordan Otis, Brandon Howe, David Nogueras, David Perlman and Luther Ross.  Please come out and watch the playoffs and these players receive their recognition.

The 3X SSFL Champion St. Pete Sharks defeated the first year Tampa Bay Comets 41-6 to eliminate the Comets from round 2 of the playoffs and an opportunity to play in the Championship Rice Bowl.  Sadly, the first year of the Comets season comes to an end. The first year has been a major learning season for the owner, coaches, players, support staff and fans.  We survived without any major injuries and lack of sponsorship dollars, and benefited mid-season from the addition of new players and personnel from other teams and leagues that only added to our depth. The coaches evaluated players and had some play in new positions to see what their strengths and weaknesses were. Each game was a new experience for players, coaches, trainers and our Sports Psychologist.  There is a difference between high school football, college football, arena football and the NFL.  Our league is the step between college and the arena/NFL.  We play NFL rules, outdoors, on a 100 yard field and hit hard.  Teamwork and knowing the plays is critical and instrumental in winning.  Egos are huge and the excitement of a "highlight film play" feeds the team and individual egos. Bickering among players is normal and defeating but will be tempered as they mature. Ballers want to play and the Comets have players.  Our foundation is being built and I look forward to the next season and the continued growth of this organization. As players move on in life, we hope they have fond memories of playing with the Comets and hope their personal growth has benefited from lessons learned on the field and the many team practice sessions.  Our tryouts will begin again in June or July and I hope the nucleous of our team will re-join the Comets again in our Quest for the Championship.  Thanks team for a great first year.

Sincerely,

Rex Sano,owner.

Saturday, April 25, 2009: The St. Pete Sharks will host the Tampa Bay Comets in round 1 of the SSFL playoffs. The kick-off is at 7:05 PM at the 31st Sports Complex, 4801 31st. Street South, St. Petersburg, FL. Please come out to cheer on the Comets as they end their initial season and enter into the first round of the playoffs.  Comets will be wearing white this game and want to avenge their previous loss to the Sharks.  Go Comets!!!

April 11, 2009:Orlando Rage 35 - Comets 8

The Comets came to Winter Garden to play the #1 team Orlando Rage and played a great game.  If the first half would have been a warm-up scrimage, and just the second half counted, the Comets would have emerged the winners!!!

The Comets got off to a bad start with more turnovers on the offense.  A few interceptions and missed tackles led to 28 points by the Rage in the first half. Comets players still pointed fingers at each other and let them Rage get into their head.  At half-time, Coach Calip unleashed a verbal, but constructive and motivational assult on the players to get their heads focused on the TEAM and the game and not themselves.  RESULT: a touchtown and 2 point conversion in the second half and more importantly, the Rage was held to just 7 points the whole second half.

The Comets have a bye week next week, but will be mentally and physically preparing for their participation in the first round of playoffs. Here was another great game without injuries and exciting, smash-mouth football on a fabulous, pro-turf, synthetic field. The Comets continue to gel and grow as a first year team in the SSFL.  Look for great things from us next year and who knows, maybe the dark horse in the playoffs!

The Tampa Bay Comets imploded and defeated themselves by allowing 36 points against the Piranhas and losing 36-8.  Hard to win with over 7 turnovers.  Highlights included the defense causing a safety, great drive to the endzone by QB Brian Garnett and textbook tackling by #22, Jordon Otis. Rev RV Brown led both teams in prayer at the end of the game and reminded everyone how fortunate we are to have this contest of wills and physical ability and to learn to play better as a team. Kudos to the coaching staff for keeping this game under control as some tempers flared and assignments were missed. Next, we play the  #1 team, the Orlando Rage in Orlando.

The  Comets re-entered the SSFL Football Galaxy with a hail storm of energized players this past Saturday, March 28th at Wellfield Park against the Sarasota Seminoles. We defeated our classy opponents in a back and forth nail-biter with a 20-17 win.  The whole offense and defense were one cohesive unit, with everyone being a superstar.  There were run-backs for touchdowns, interceptions, fade passes into the end zone, blocked kicks, textbook tackling and blocking and much more by both teams.  This was what football is all about and game balls go to all the coaches and players of the Tampa Comets and Sarasota Seminoles for one exciting and classy  game.

March 21, 2009, resulted in a defeat of the Comets by the St. Pete Sharks 42-0. While the score looks bad, it was a great learning process for the team as we blended in our new team members from the Tampa Bay Sentinels.  Look for Comet Football to erupt next week against the Sarasota Seminoles at Wellfield Park in Venice.

The Orlando Rage vs. the Tampa Bay Comets game that was to be played on Saturday, March 7 will be rescheduled.  The Comets are very happy to welcome the addition of the new players coming in from the Tampa Bay Sentinels.  Please check back for their names and positions.  Additionally, we want to welcome the SSFL 2008 Hall of Fame Coach, Denny Randolph to our staff.

Congratulations to the Tri-City Piranhas for their hospitality at Largo HS.  The Comets lost 0-29, but the coaching staff and players were able to see our weaknesses and will capitalize on lost opportunities in the future.  We are now 1-3 in our first season with the SSFL.  We are still in need of some big offensive lineman as well as defensive lineman to support our speed players.

Our next game is away on Saturday, February 28 against the Tri-City Piranhas.  Kick-off is at 7:05 PM at Largo High School.

We played a hard fought home game and were ahead 3-0 for the first 24 minutes, but succumbed to injuries and turn-overs and lost 3-28. Our win loss is now 1-2.

First home game Saturday, February 21 at 7:05 PM against the 2007 Division Champion Sarasota Millionaires.  Game to be played at the Sunlake High School Football field at 3023 Sunlake Blvd in Land O'Lakes, FL.  Bring your family and friends to see football with a heart and soul and support these two fine SSFL teams.

We had an exciting game this Saturday versus the Tampa Bay Sentinels. Our guys played their hearts out and defeated the Sentinels 32-8.  Our won loss is now 1-1.

Congratulations go out to the entire team, offense and defense and the coaches, staff and volunteers that make up the heart and soul of this team.

We are still looking for some O-line and D-line players to give our first string a rest.  Also, please see the league website at: www.southernstatesfootball.com.

News Article - A Special Thank You - Apr 23, 2009

As our season nears the end, I wish to give special thanks to two professionals who are always there for the players and who we could not do without.

Dr. Nancy Skaer has provided the motivational and psychological training to help our players visualize their goals and achieve maximaum performance. She has provided the same expert services she gives the NFL and MLB players to our minor league players.

Shawn Ganley has been our certified athletic trainer on the sidelines during every game.  She tapes, stretches and takes care of the training needs of our players without ever complaining. She is the calming force the players look to whenever there is an ache or pain or in need of bandaging.

Thank you from all of us.

News Article - Maturing of a team - Mar 29, 2009

The Tampa Comets are one of the new teams in the SSFL for 2009.  It has been a crazy season. It started with my co-owner quitting the team before the season started, players coming in and out, jerseys coming in late, loss of home field, loss of some coaches and lack of sponsorship due to recession and time constraints, and the late addition of new  and old players from other teams.  Yet, the game must go on.  This is a core group of young people that love the game.  Additionally, this is a core group of business professional and coaches that love to mentor and guide these young men through life through athletics.  These are the players, coaches, doctors and trainers of the Tampa Bay Comets.  I can never say enough about these fine examples of future leaders and citizens of the Tampa Bay community. To watch this group gel into a family that cares and plays like a team should be an example to everyone. I look forward to going into the playoffs and more importantly, putting together more of the best of the best next year.

Thank you everyone involved with the Tampa Comets for being a family that cares about each other. For those of you who haven't seen us play or haven't met the team yet, look for a later news release about a meet and greet of our family and how you can get involved.

Sincerely,

Rex M. Sano

Owner/CEO
