St. Anthony's Kim among nation's best in PV

WAILUKU - St. Anthony High School senior Ethan Kim entered rare air when he cleared 15 feet in the pole vault at last week's Kamehameha Relays.

Kim, the defending state champion, is only the fifth vaulter in the state to clear 15 feet, according to St. Anthony coach Allen Duarte. Kim's mark is currently tied for 30th best in the nation among high school athletes this season, according to the website Milesplit.com.

"You know, we will find out real soon whether last week was his best meet ever or whether he is going to continue to climb the ladder," Duarte said Friday before the preliminaries of the Victorino Ohana Invitational. "The state-meet record is 15-3 by Bubba (McLean) and Bubba's 15-9 at the (Maui Interscholastic League) meet (in 1997) is the unofficial state record. I think that 15-3 could fall to Ethan at state."

Tonight's finals of the Victorino meet, hosted by St. Anthony - formerly the Blue and Gold Invitational - will start at 4:30 p.m. at Yamamoto Track & Field Facility inside War Memorial Stadium.

Kim is one of the smallest vaulters Duarte has ever coached and one of nine state champions he has coached in the sport. Duarte started St. Anthony's pole vault dynasty - the tiny Wailuku school has 12 state championships in the sport - when he won state crowns in 1980 and 1981.

"Oh yeah, certainly, I can't think of anyone else who has come close to being as good at his size," Duarte said. "I am pretty much his size, and (former Baldwin state champion) Linden Wada, who was also a two-time state champion, he is small. Almost all other pole vaulters are in the 5-8 to 6-foot range.

"I'd like to think Ethan is 5-7, but I think he is closer to 5-5."

Perhaps Kim's biggest strength is his speed.

"He is really fast," Duarte said. "I think if he were to run the 100 he would be one of the best sprinters on the island. He is pound-for-pound maybe the strongest kid I have coached."

Kim currently plans to attend Butte Junior College in California, but Duarte said the sky is the limit at this point.

"I asked him, 'What if you clear 16 and UCLA offers you a scholarship?' " Duarte said. "I don't think the door is shut on something like that yet."

The state high school meet is set for May 6-7 at Yamamoto. Hilo is the only off-island school to send athletes to this week's meet - the Vikings' contingent consists of four pole vaulters.

Kim can join Wada, Duarte and McLean as the only two-time state champions in the boys pole vault from the MIL.

"I have personally coached nine (state champions)," Duarte said. "Ethan is as good as any of them."

Fisler is first track champ from Maui Prep

WAILUKU – Maui Prep Academy freshman Caitlyn Fisler became her school’s first league champion in Maui Interscholastic League track and field, winning both the girls 800 and 3,000 meter runs at last Saturday’s Junior Varsity Championships.

Fisler won the two-lap race in 2 minutes, 43.77 seconds, nipping Maui High’s Andreana Agcaoili (2:44.35). Then later in the evening, she won the 3,000 in 13:34.50. Baldwin’s Christina Wine was second in 13:44.83.

Wilson’s 36 points lead Bears to boys title

WAILUKU – Baldwin High School hurdler/jumper Rowe Wilson and sprinters John Vergara and Vance Rosete were big winners in the boys division of the MIL Junior Varsity Championships last Saturday at the Yamamoto Track & Field Facility.

Wilson won the triple jump (39 feet, 4.75 inches) and the high jump (5-10) and finished second in both hurdle races (16.40, 42.84) to score a team-high 36 individual points as Baldwin won the team title with 165 points. Kamehameha Maui was second with 117 points, followed by Maui High’s 90 and Seabury Hall’s 36.

Girls race open, Baldwin favorite in boys

WAILUKU – On paper, the Maui Interscholastic League Track and Field Championships should be a runaway in the boys division with Baldwin repeating. The race for the team title in the girls division, however, is wide open between defending champion Baldwin, King Kekaulike, Lahainaluna and Maui High.

The Yamamoto Track & Field Facility will host Friday’s trials and Saturday’s finals, beginning with the field events at 4 p.m.
