Runner's Paradise 100-meter Challenge Preview

Runner's Paradise 100-meter Challenge brings top field

WAILUKU – The Runner’s Paradise 100-meter Challenge will highlight the second annual Trojans Blue & Gold Invitational Track and Field Meet, April 18-19, at the Yamamoto Track & Field Facility.

The 100-meter challenge will feature six Olympic-caliber sprinters who have all run 10.26 seconds or faster. Two are former USC sprinters and one is here for the third time. The race will take place midway through the finals of the Trojans Blue & Gold Invitational on Saturday, April 19. The meet finals is scheduled to start with the discus at 3:30 p.m. The trials will start at 4 p.m.

The Trojans Blue & Gold Invitational is hosted by St. Anthony High School and will feature the Maui Interscholastic League’s best track and field competitors going head-to-head with several of the best individuals from the Neighbor Islands. Mililani of the Oahu Interscholastic Association and Iolani of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu are two visiting schools sending participants.

The Runner’s Paradise 100-meter Challenge will feature the following six sprinters: 

Ricardo Williams, Jr., a Jamaican sprinter with a lifetime best of 10.13 in the 100 meters and a 20.33 in the 200, established at Yokohama, Japan in 2000. His best in the 200 is ranked 11th all-time in Jamaica. He is currently a member of the Puma International Track & Field Team.

Garry Jones, 23, a former USC sprinter who grew up in Oakland, Calif. and attended Skyline High School. Jones, who is now being coaches by former Jamaican Olympian Donald Quarrie, was a key member of the Trojans’ 4x100 relay and ran a personal best of 10.23 at the 2006 NCAA West Regional Outdoor Championships. Jones is also has a personal best of 21.23 in the 200. 

Carlos Moore, 23, a member of the Southern Cal Cheetahs has a personal best of 10.04 in the 100 meters and set the meet record of 10.07 at the Jim Bush So. Cal Championships in 2006. In 2007, he ran 10.20 at the USA Track and Field Nationals and won the 200 (20.83) at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational. Moore is attempting to qualify in his first Olympic Trials.

Jeff Laynes, 34, is originally from the Bay Area and has been to Maui twice before for the 100-meter challenge. Laynes currently runs for Brooks Sports and has a personal best of 10.08. In 2007, he posted best marks of 10.16 and 21.13 in the 100 and 200, respectively. 

Andre Ammons, 30, a former USC sprinter who is now a teammate of Jeff Laynes for Brooks Sports. Ammons ran a personal best 10.26 in the 100 last year at Modesto, Calif. He also has personal best of 20.74 in the 200 and 45.75 in the 400.

Andrew Reyes, 32, a sprinter from Liberia has a personal best of 10.24 in the 100 meters. Reyes is currently a member of the Liberian Track Team.  

There will be an autograph signing at the Trojans Blue & Gold Invitational Trials, April 18, between 6-7 p.m. The public is invited to attend. Admission for the trials and finals are $3 adults, $2 students. Children under 12 and senior citizens are free.
