Gold glory/2007 State ResultsMay. 20, 2007 Rasmussen wins Trojans' 12th pole vault title http://youtube.com/watch?v=BqJKCHzJ92k By ROBERT COLLIAS, Sports Writer (The Maui News) WAILUKU – Going into the Island Movers State Track and Field Championships, St. Anthony High School owned 11 state boys pole vault titles. With the best of those former champions – state record holder and two-time champion Bubba McLean – looking on Saturday, Erik Rasmussen made it 12. Rasmussen, a senior, matched his personal record of 14 feet, 9 inches to win the title over Mililani’s Cameron Daugherty on fewer misses. Billy Pacheco, a sophomore, showed that the cupboard is not bare for the Trojans as he finished fourth at 14-3, also a personal best. “All I can say is we have great coaches, I give it all to them,’’ Rasmussen said. “Without them we wouldn’t be anything.’’ Allen Duarte, also a former two-time state champion for the Trojans in the event, came back to the school to coach after a four-year absence. “Allen is a great pole vaulter and he showed me the way,’’ Rasmussen said. Rasmussen said he talked to McLean, who watched from the packed grandstands. “He told me he wanted me to break his record (of 15-3),’’ Rasmussen said. After having the title in hand with the bar at 15-3, Rasmussen took a shot at the record by moving the bar to 15-4 on his final attempt. “I missed, but it was pretty great to take the shot,’’ Rasmussen said. Daugherty was momentarily disqualified in the event after taping his hand for a blister, but was later reinstated and came back for three attempts at 15-4, all of which he missed. McLean graduated from St. Anthony in 1997 before a stellar career at the University of California. He has been on Maui for the last eight months, but is leaving for Australia on Monday. He hopes to revive his career there and improve on his lifetime best of 18-9. “I definitely wanted him to break my record,’’ McLean said of Rasmussen. “It was tough with everything going on. I think that just the aura around the whole event was amazing. I think if both guys were still in at the end (at the same time) they both would have broken it.’’ Pacheco also had a large smile on his face after accepting his fourth-place medal with a nine-inch improvement on his personal record. “Everything came together,’’ Pacheco said. “The whole season I have been struggling on my steps, mentally and physically. It is great that everything came together here at the state meet in front of our home crowd.’’ The other MIL boys to earn individual medals in the meet were Kamehameha Maui’s Kekoa Mountcastle, who tied for fourth in the high jump at 6-0 and was sixth in the long jump; Keahi Raikes, who was sixth in the high jump; Paea Keawekane, who finished third in the 100; King Kekaulike’s Jesse Henderson, who was third in the 400; Lahaianaluna’s Matthew Lawless, who was sixth in the 400; and Maui High’s Mitchell Crim, who was fifth in the 200. http://www.kautech.com/results/hhsaa2007/ ISLAND MOVERS STATE TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS Saturday’s Finals At Yamamoto Track & Field Facility GIRLS Final team standings–1.
