2008 track season a wash for Grossman?

By RODNEY S. YAP

WAILUKU – Speculation surrounding Seabury Hall’s Hailey Grossman, the MIL’s premiere distance runner, could end this week at the Trojans’ Blue & Gold Invitational Track and Field Meet.

Grossman, the state’s defending champion in the girls 3,000, is contemplating a return to the track. Although she opted to sit out more than half the 2008 season for personal reasons, the sophomore runner will weigh her options after meeting with Spartan head coach Tom Reher and athletic director Steve Colflesh.

“She’s been running, but she’s just not running for her school,” said Bobby Grossman, Hailey’s dad, Friday afternoon. “We have to deal with the school.”

According to Reher, the team would welcome Grossman back with open arms. As far as Reher is concern, “she never really left.”

Grossman, 15, is a two-time MIL cross country champion, and the most dominate runner  beyond 1,500 meters on the Valley Isle.

One of the reasons for Grossman’s hiatus came in the form of a 5-inch growth spurt over the last 10 months. Only 13 years-old and 5-foot-5 when she won her first MIL cross-county title, the older Grossman said his daughter is now 5-foot-10.

Adjusting to the vertical increase continues to be physically challenging for Grossman as she deals with the awkwardness of suddenly being taller.

Last week, Hailey and her younger sister, Dakota, competed in a 10K run hosted by the Valley Isle Road Runners. Today the two had planned on running in the YMCA 5K Run.

SPARTANS: Freshman Kailea Tracy-Visintainer is ranked No. 1 in the state’s Top 20 listing by Big Island’s Bob Martin (kautech.com) in three events, 200 (25.02), 400 (57.31) and 800 (2:21.0). She is also ranked fourth in the 100 (12.56) and fifth in the high jump 5-0. Ironically, all three of Tracy-Visintainer’s top times were established against Mainland competition. Her 200 time came against competition from Highlands, Calif., her 400 mark at Arcadia, Calif., and her 800 time at the Terry Albritton Invitational at University of Hawaii…Lea Lunblad is rated No. 7 in the 1,500 (5:05.2) and No. 11 in the 400 at 62.4h.

Kailea Tracy-Visintainer is No. 1 in three state events

BEARS: A medical condition could sideline senior hurdler Ciera Wilson for the remainder of the season. Wilson finished fourth and fifth in the state last year in the girls 100 (15.54) and 300 (47.97) hurdles, respectively. She ran 16.0h in the highs at the Kamakea meet -- ranked No. 2 on kautech.com's Top 20 list -- and has not run since. Asia Okamura is the team's No. 2 hurdler and the state's silver medalist in the pole vault (10-3)....Long jumper Ayesha Pladera added the triple jump to her 2008 resume on Friday and is now the team's top performer in both events...Senior sprinter Brittany Feiteira has four weeks remaining in her prep career. Already one of the best sprinters in school history, Feiteira is arguably the hardest working track athletes in the MIL and by far the most seasoned, having competed in multiple state events since the ninth grade...Maile Thomas' efforts can not be overlooked. The runner-up in the 400 at state last year, Thomas also runs a key leg on both the 400 and 1,600 relays.

NA ALII: Bailey Massenburg did not make the trip to Arcadia and participated in Friday's Meet #4. Massenburg finished third at state in the 1,500 last year with a time of 4:54.69. She is currently ranked No. 2 in the state with a time of 4:59.74 and No. 7 in the 800 (2:30.41) and 3,000 (11:14.31)....At MIL Meet #3, Kekaulike showed its strength in the 400, sweeping the first four place finishes. Following Massenburg were Mia Minkler, Melanie Dieksu and Savannah Aroyan. Expect Kekaulike to improve its time of 4:24.34 (12th) in the 4x400 relay by the time state rolls around... in the won the 4x400 relay team has already qualified for state at 4:24.34...Minkler won a fourth-place medal in the 400 (62.01) at state last year...keep an eye on the contributions of Kelsey Abellanida and sophomore Bianca Rajan in the coming weeks.

WARRIORS: Kaahumanu Rozet, the school's record-holder in the 800, 1,500 and 3,000, is currently ranked No. 4 in the 1,500 (5:04.31). Because of wrestling, Rozet got a late start for track. The senior is looking to improve on the state silver-medal performance she had last year in the 1,500 (4:51.46). A gold medal would look sweet on her mantle next to the gold medal she won in wrestling....check out the Warriors team website at: http://web.mac.com/spencer07/www.KSMTrack.com/HOME.html.

SABERS: Kristy Inamasu recently added the long and triple jumps to her 4-8 high jump. Fresh legs could prove positive for her down the stretch. Teammate Dallas Puaa is tied for the second best vault in the state at 9-6.

TROJANS: Nicole Brown has been one of the brightest stars in the sport, considering the senior had never competed in track and field until three months ago. Brown is no flash in the pan, and figures to finish among the league's best in the high jump, triple jump and 300 hurdles.... Freshmen hurdles Rachel Uehara and Malia Chang are showing steady improvement and will be forces to reckon with in the future.

LUNAS: Jordyn Kilgore had already made her mark in the long and triple jumps coming into this season and now she is turning heads in the hurdles. Kilgore is No. 6 in the 100 highs (16.75) and No. 14 in the 300s (50.44), this to go with her 16-7 3/4 in the long jump (No. 5) and 34-4 1/2 in the triple jump (No. 4).

FARMERS: Molokai's Abigail Adolpho is 16th on the Top 20 list in the girls 3,000 at 11:52.14.
