100-meter Challenge pumps up Maui crowd

WAILUKU -- The anticipation of the Runner's Paradise 100-meter challenge was worth every second Saturday as an estimated crowd of 2,500 lined the fence and stood on their feet cheering the five elite participants.

The Yamamoto Track & Field Facility was buzzing when Ricardo Williams of Jamaica crossed the finish line in 10.351, followed closely by Jeff Laynes in 10.358 and Carlos Moore in 10.42. Andre Ammons was fourth in 10.59 and Andrew Reyes in 11.24.

Williams and the other runners enjoyed the crowds cheers after the race, pausing to wave to the fans.

"They really enjoyed it," said Rudy Huber, owner of Runner's Paradise in the Maui Maui. "They were impressed with the meet, they liked the weather, they liked the autograph session, they liked the aloha the people showed them."

Williams won a $500 check from Hairways in the Maui Mall. Laynes received $250 from Pukalani Superette and Moore got $150 from Jerome's Ale House.Huber said the guys enjoyed the beach, Twin Falls, the sun rise at Haleakala, and many other Maui treats before returning home.

"They are not used to being able to spend time anywhere," Huber added, "because when they are in Europe they fly in and have to fly out right after the meet. So to come to Hawaii and be able to see some of the sights was a real special trip."

Moore won the 200 exhibition in 20.97, Williams was next in 21.06, Ammons in 21.13, Reyes in 22.69, Laynes in 22.87. After winning his race, Moore paused to flex his bicep muscle in front of the crowd and pose for pictures.

Huber and Blue & Gold Meet Director Rodney Yap have already talked about next year's event and the plan is to add a Women's 100-meter Challenge and an All-Maui Youth Meet on the Thursday leading up to the meet.
