Blue & Gold finals recapApr. 27, 2008 Kamahele, Tracy-Visintainer flex muscles in 100, 200
Sprinters "wow" crowd at Blue & Gold Finals By RODNEY S. YAP WAILUKU – When the dust settled, the Trojans’ Blue & Gold Invitational Track and Field Meet delivered what it promised – plenty of excitement in the sprints and a half dozen records.Baldwin High School senior Kalei Kamahele proved why he is one of the best sprinters in the state, setting meet records in the 100 (10.94) and 200 (22.12), anchoring the Bears’ winning 4x100 relay team and running the first leg on the record-breaking 4x400 relay team.
Kamahele’s 25-point contribution helped Baldwin easily win the boys team title with 197 points. Maui High was second with 74 points, followed by King Kekaulike’s 64 and Lahainaluna’s 44. Seabury Hall freshman Kailea Tracy-Visintainer won both the girls 100 (12.52) and 200 (24.85). Tracy-Visintainer’s time in the 200 surpassed her own previous best of 25.02, which was already faster than the current state record in the event. Her new time of 24.85 is the fastest recorded time by a prep female in the state of Hawaii. While Kamahele had Mililani’s Kawika Ornellas (10.97, 22.73) to push him in both events, Tracy-Visintainer was not pushed in either the 100 or the 200 as Baldwin’s Brittany Feiteira did not compete. Feiteira did own the previous record in the 200 at 25.54. So it came as no surprise that Kamahele and Tracy-Visintainer won the “Shane Victorino” Most Outstanding Athlete award for their efforts on the track. Lahainaluna’s Jordyn Kilgore and Baldwin’s Sean Tesoro were solid choices for Most Outstanding Athletes in the field events. Kilgore won the triple jump (34-0), the long jump (17-0) and the high jump (4-10) – all in personal best. She also won the 100 hurdles (17.41) to score a meet-high 40 of her team’s 72 points. Tesoro had three tosses of 160-feet plus in the discus and finished with 161-3 for a new meet record. He also threw the shot put 49-11. Bailey Massenburg’s triple victory in the girls 800 (2:26.66), 1,500 (5:05.85) and 3,000 (12:06.94) did not go unnoticed as she received several top female votes. Massenburg helped Na Alii win their second straight Blue & Gold team title. Kekaulike finished with 125 points, followed by Baldwin's 98. Lahainaluna was third with 72 and Kamehameha Maui fourth with 57. King Kekaulike outscored runner-up Baldwin 52-13 in Massenburg’s three events. Kelsey Abellanida finished second to Massenburg in the 3,000 and third in the 1,500, while teammate Alexa Foley was second in the 800. The sixth and final record of the night came in the boys 800, where Baldwin's Joey Amescua was pushed by Kekaulike's Reid Hunter. Both runners ran below the record of 2:02.1, but Amescua's name goes down in the record books at 1:59.24, while Hunter ran superbly in 2:00.06. The meet’s other double winners were: Kekaulike’s Hunter in the 1,500 (4:26.02) and 3,000 (10:18.23), Maui High’s Joshua Dias in the 110 high hurdles (16.44) and 300 hurdles (41.61), and Mililani’s Cameron Daughtery in the long jump (20-8) and pole vault (14-6).
