http://www.usatf-hi.org/index.htm By RODNEY S. YAP HONOLULU – The King Kekaulike High School girls sprint-meter relay team out did its boys quartet Saturday, earning the Maui Interscholastic League’s only gold medal at the 62nd Annual Punahou Invitational Relays. More than 1,200 track and field athletes representing 30 high schools throughout Hawaii competed at Alexander Field, and the girls of Kekaulike – Bailey Massenburg, Alexa Foley, Sophia Freeman and Mia Minkler – defeated host-school Punahou in the 1,600-meter (200, 200, 400, 800) Sprint Medley. Na Alii were timed in 4 minutes, 17.81 seconds compared to the Buffanblu’s 4:19.46. Last year, all the fuss surrounded the Kekaulike boys Sprint Medley Relay that trounced Iolani. But the Upcountry school fell short in its bid to defend its title, despite returning all four runners in Eli Smith, Max Ross, Jesse Henderson and Reid Hunter. While the Kekaulike boys relay team ran faster Saturday than a year ago, 3:42.64 to 3:45.14, it finished a close second to Punahou’s winning time of 3:42.46. Kekaulike’s other silver medal came in the Girls 4x200 Relay and this time Minkler and Freeman were joined by Bianca Rajan and Melanie Dickson. The girls were clocked in 1:50.89. The MIL’s other silver medal from the Punahou Relays came in the boys pole vault, where St. Anthony junior Billy Pacheco and Punahou senior Dave Walden both cleared 14 feet, but Walden was awarded first place on fewer misses. The event marked the second straight week that Pacheco came up short. Last week, at the Trojans’ Blue & Gold Invitational on the Valley Isle, the St. Anthony vaulter finished runner-up to Mililani senior Cameron Daugherty, who posted the state’s best vault at 14-6. Daugherty was visiting colleges on the Mainland over the weekend and did not compete at Punahou. Pacheco, Walden and Daugherty will meet again at the state championships in two weeks. This week the three vaulters and their teammates will be busy competing in their respective league championships. Punahou honored Radford senior Christopher Rainey as the meet’s Most Outstanding male performer. Rainey anchored three winning relay teams in the boys 4x100 (42.97), 4x200 (1:29.70), and 4x400 (3:23.30). Meanwhile, Buffanblu freshman Lahaina Zoller earned Most Outstanding female performer. Zoller anchored Punahou to victories in the girls 4x200 and 4x800 relays, and a second-place finish in the 4x100 relay. Joshua Villoria won the Hawaii’s Fastest Man 100 meters in 10.95. Kenny Patton was next in 11.08, followed by Chad Miyamoto’s 11.16 and Kelsey Nakanelua’s 11.27. The following are the results of other MIL competitors at Punahou Relays: BOYS Discus – 3.
